Design of Structures - I (RCC) : Tutorial Problems Tutorial - 1: Design of Beams Using WSM

This document provides tutorial problems for designing beams using the Working Stress Method (WSM). The problems involve calculating neutral axis and lever arm constants, moment of resistance factors, and steel percentages for balanced beam sections. Data is provided for beams with varying widths, moments, concrete grades, and steel grades to be analyzed as balanced, under-reinforced, and reduced steel sections.

Design of Structures I (RCC) : Tutorial Problems

Tutorial 1 : Design of Beams using WSM

1. Calculate neutral axis constant, lever arm constant, moment of resistance factor and percentage of steel
for balanced case in working stress method for all combinations involving M20, M25, Fe250, Fe415 and
tabulate the results.

2. Maximum bending moment in a beam is M. If width of beam is b, design beam as a balance section.

Data\Group A B C D
b (mm) 230 350 230 350
M (kNm) 56.9 75.7 50.4 72.2
Concrete Grade M20 M25 M20 M25
Steel Grade Fe415 Fe415 Fe250 Fe250

3. Calculate the moment of resistance MR as a balanced section given that effective cross section of beam
is b x d if grade of steel is (a) Fe250 and (b) Fe415.

Data\Group A B C D
b (mm) 230 300 230 300
d (mm) 450 600 450 600
Concrete Grade M20 M20 M25 M25

4. Design above beam of Ex.3 as under-reinforced section for 0.8 M R moment of resistance as of the
balanced section.

5. Calculate the moment of resistance MR for the beam with cross section b x d with area of steel
Ast = 0.75 x Ast,balanced if grade of steel is (a) Fe250 and (b) Fe415.

Data\Group A B C D
b (mm) 230 300 230 300
d (mm) 450 600 450 600
Concrete Grade M20 M20 M25 M25
