EDUCATION
Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry (August 2008-July 2013 )
Prof. Yan Zhao, Iowa State University, Ames, IA
RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
Postdoctoral Associate, Prof. Theresa Reineke (August 2013-January 2015)
Department of Chemistry, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities
Design and synthesis of polymers using free and controlled radical polymerization techniques
and characterization of the polymers.
Formulating numerous polymer excipient-drug solid dispersions using spray drying and
characterization of the spray dried dispersions using various instrumental techniques
Performing in vitro simulated biological experiments on polymer-drug dispersions and
determining drug release profiles.
Investigating the role of thermoresponsiveness, hydrophobic-hydrophilic balance and drug-
polymer interactions on drug encapsulation and release.
Understanding the structure-property relationships between excipients and actives.
Design and multistep synthesis of bile acid derived facially amphiphilic cyclic and linear
oligocholates using microwave assisted amide coupling and click reactions
Investigating their behavior in lipid membrane (self-assembly, molecular recognition and
transmembrane transport) using spectroscopic techniques and leakage assays in various types of
liposomes.
Modification of the macrocycles prepared by two synthetic methods with aromatic donor and
acceptor groups to study the effect of ring flexibility and side chain - stacking.
Modification of the macrocycles with carboxylates to understand the role of hydrogen bonding-
Combining the hydrophobic interactions and the hydrogen-bond-based carboxylic acid
dimerization was found to be an effective strategy to tune the structure and activity of self-
assembled nanopores in lipid membranes.
Design and synthesis of isotopically labeled linear and cyclic oligocholates to understand their
behavior in lipid membrane by solid state NMR.
Design and synthesis of fluorescent linear and cyclic oligocholates to understand their behavior
in lipid membrane by fluorescence techniques such as environmental sensitive emission, red-
edge excitation shift (REES), and fluorescence quenching by water- and oil-soluble quenchers.
Glucose was modified with C12 chains and characterized its liquid crystalline behavior using polarized
light microscopy.
