Sacred Heart Catholic School
From the Principal August 31, 2017
Dear Sacred Heart Families,
The school year has begun and we are off to a wonderful start! The Parent Group has been hosting the Back to School Break-
fast for many years and it is always a joyful and exciting way to start the year. We are so happy that many of you took the ex-
tra time to prepare a meal that we can all enjoy together. What a beautiful way to get to know the people we share our school
with. A special thank you to Stacy Parker for the Boo Hoo bags for all of the Kindergarten parents.
My hope for the school year is that Sacred Heart School continues to be a solid, joyful presence in every familys life. We are
striving to make the days comfortable and interesting for our students as they learn and grow in education and in spirit. I
understand that most families are very busy with work, sports and family commitments and many of you sacrifice to provide
your children with a private catholic education. That is a sacrifice that we understand and respect. As the year continues, we
will provide not only the highest quality education but many special events and added extras that I hope will make memories
and lasting impressions on our school community. Feel free to be as involved as you want. We are very excited and we are
planning a lot of fun!
We will begin using the Hudson Area Schools buses and hot lunch program on Tuesday, September 5th. I have been working
with Chuck Jacobs, director of transportation, and we are ready to safely transport all of the students who signed up on their
registration or who talked to Hudson Schools directly.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns or ideas. I am thrilled to be the principal of Sacred Heart School
and I am here to serve all of our families in any way.
Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend and I will see you all on Tuesday.
God Bless,
Anne Atkin

News from the Preschool
It has been a WONDERFUL first week back to school. Our week has been filled with learning our class-
room rules, learning how to become Bucket Fillers, getting use to how the schedule and room operate, as
well just getting to know one another. We have also been busy learning about the proper way to use and
carry scissors and learning how to use "just a dot, not a lot" of glue.
Due to large class sizes on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, we have decided that it would be best for the
students and classroom management to add an additional aid on those mornings to our team. I would like to
Welcome Mrs. Karen Downing to Sacred Heart Preschool Family.
Parents please note that if your child/children are all day students they are more than welcome to bring a
special blanket, pillow, or stuffed animal if they would like for rest time. We usually just keep the item in
their lockers and send them home at the end of the week to be washed, however if the special item needs
to return home daily, please just let Mrs. Houser or myself know and we can make sure it gets packed up
nightly. Also, if you haven't done so yet, please make sure there is a spare change of clothes that we can
keep right in your child/children's locker just in case they have an accident.
I would also like to extend a very warm thank you to Miss Lauren Houser. On her last week of summer va-
cation she volunteered her time to help out down in the preschool room three out of the four days, and let
me just say, she has been an awesome helper and she will be greatly missed. THANK YOU LAUREN!!!
It is going to be a wonderful school year and I look forward to getting to know the children and yourselves
better through the year! And please don't hesitate to email me if you ever have any questions or concerns:

News from the Kindergarten
Dear Families,
Thank you for sharing your children with me!! We have had a wonderful, crazy, fun week. They have been working very
hard at making new friends, learning to respect other people, and following directions even when its not really what we want
to do to. We are practicing writing, cutting, gluing and coloring during our center time. Next week we will begin to focus
more on letter recognition and sounds for the DK students and review our sight words for K. I will also start with assess-
ments and place them into reading groups. Homework packets will start coming home the second week of September. We
do take a short (15-20 minute) rest time after lunch. Most of the children do not nap but I do have at least 2 everyday that
fall asleep. If your child would like to bring in a small pillow, blanket or stuffed animal to snuggle with at this time that is
ok.
Again, Thank you for sharing your children with me. They are all filled with so much joy, love, and spirit. I am enjoying
getting to know them. If you have any questions or concerns please let me know.

News from the 3rd/4th Grade
What a great first week of school! The weather was decent (not too hot like it usually is) and I have a super great group of
kids this year. The fourth graders are being great leaders and really showing the third graders what is expected in our class-
room; and the third graders are catching on really well!
There are just a couple small things I have changed this year. Once or twice a week the students will be getting math home-
work. They should be at the point where they know what they are doing with that concept. However, if your child is having a
hard time, please don't let it become a battle. If they don't understand something and you're not sure how to help, don't wor-
ry. Just sign the worksheet saying your child tried it but needs help with___________. Then they will still get to play Homeworkopoly
and I will reteach the concept. I will not be taking grades on each sheet of homework but I will be keeping track of who turns
it in and giving one participation grade at the end of the marking period to average with the other classwork and test
grades.
The most important homework is reading a book of the student's choice, 20 minutes a day. This is a school wide homework
assignment so I was ahead of my time last year and I really feel all the students can easily handle the extra time. Reading to
your child counts also!
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to email or call me. I make a real effort to check my email at least twice a
day (maybe not as much on weekends). Thank you for sending me your child to teach!
News from the 5th/6th Grade
Good Afternoon!
5/6 is off to a great start this week and I am looking forward to a fantastic year together! We have dived right into several
subjects this week. In math 5th grade is working on place value, while 6th grade has been working on GCF. In Social Studies
we started learning about the first Americans. We have been talking about several civilizations including the Olmec and the
Maya to name just a few.
We are using our planners everyday to record our homework assignments. Please help your student
remember to have their planner in their backpack everyday!

I am so excited to have met everyone for music this week. We got right into making music in every class. Kin-
dergarten learned the Hello Song and about Rhythm Sticks. in 1/2 we saw rhythm sticks and learned part of a
brand new song. 3/4 learned a fun quick song to help get our voices warmed up. 5/6 began to learn about the
hand bells! Be on the lookout for information on our Veterans Day program which will quickly be upon us!
I am looking forward to a fun and musical year!
