Objective: To solve equations with brackets using the balancing method

Example: 3(2x 3) Example: x( x + 2)

= 6x - 9 = x2 + 2x

SECTION A - Expand the following:

(a) 2(x 3) (b) 3(x + 5) (c) 2(2x 1)
(d) 3(2y + 1) (e) 5(2y 4) (f) 4(2 3y)
(g) x(x + 4) (h) x(x 3) (i) y(2y + 5)
(j) a(3a 2) (k) 2b(b + 6) (l) 3c(2 2c)

SECTION B Expand the bracket first, then solve by using the balancing method

Example: 3(2x 3) = 15
6x - 9 = 15
6x - 9+9 = 15+9
6x = 24
6 6
x = 4

(a) 2(x + 3) = 10 (b) 4(x 1) = 12 (c) 3(x + 7) = 9

(d) 2(x 1) = -4 (e) 4(3x 1) = 20 (f) 5(x + 6) = 20
(g) 2(5x 3) = 14 (h) 3(2x 1) = 15 (i) 4(x 2) = 3
(j) 3(x + 2) = 11 (k) 2(x + 3) = 7 (l) 2(2x + 3) = 1

SECTION C Expand the bracket(s)

Get rid of the smallest amount of letters first

Example: 2(2x 1) = 2(x + 2)

4x - 2 = 2x + 4
4x-2x - 2 = 2x-2x + 4 ( -2x from each side)
2x - 2 = + 4
2x - 2+2 = +4+2
2x =6
2 2
x = 3

(a) 2(x + 3) = x + 7 (b) 5(2x 1) = 3x + 9 (c) 3(x 1) = x + 7

(d) 3(x 1) = 2(x + 1) (e) 4(x + 2) = 2(x + 5) (f) 5(x + 1) = 3(x + 4)
(g) 2(x + 1) = 4(x 2) (h) 2(x 4) = 3(x + 2) (i) 4(x 3) = x
