Tutorial Sheet 1

This document provides 20 problems related to calculus concepts including Rolle's theorem, Lagrange's mean value theorem, Cauchy's mean value theorem, and properties of functions such as polynomials, logarithms, trigonometric functions. The problems cover techniques for determining properties of functions like number of real roots, establishing inequalities between functions, and applying mean value theorems.

Tutorial Sheet-1 AUTUMN 2017

MATHEMATICS-I (MA10001) August 1, 2017

1. Determine the values of c which satisfy the Rolles theorem for the function f (x) = x3
3x2 x + 3 on [1, 3].

2. Without finding the derivative of the function f (x), prove that all roots of the given function

of degree n with n distinct real roots.

3. Prove that f (x) = x3 7x2 + 25x + 8 has exactly one real root.

4. If f (x) = (x a)m (x b)n , where m, n N. Use Rolles theorem to show that the point
where f 0 (x) vanishes divides the line segment a x b in the ratio m : n.

5. Prove that if f (x) is any polynomial over R and f 0 (x) is the derivative of f (x) then between
any two consecutive roots of f 0 there lies atmost one root of f .

6. Use Rolles theorem to prove the following:

8. If p(x) is a polynomial and R, prove that between any two real roots of p(x) = 0 there
is a root of p0 (x) + p(x) = 0.

9. Prove that the equation x4 4x 1 = 0 has exactly two real roots.

10. i. Suppose that f (0) = 3 and f 0 (x) 5 for all x. Use Lagranges mean value theorem

12. Apply Lagranges mean value theorem to show that

i. tan1 x + cot1 x = 2 .
ii. 3 cos1 (x) cos1 (3x 4x3 ) = for all x ( 12 , 12 ).

13. Suppose f be continuous on [0,2] and differentiable on (0,2) and satisfies f (0) = 0, f (2) = 2.
Prove that there exist c (0,2) such that f 0 (c) = f (c)
