The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the main component of a computer system that processes instructions from programs and data. It contains the arithmetic logic unit (ALU) that performs arithmetic and logic operations and the control unit that extracts instructions and directs the operation of the entire system. The CPU connects to memory and other devices through the pins on the integrated circuit package and sockets like the pin grid array (PGA) or Dual Inline Memory Module (DIMM) slots that allow for expansion and upgrading of the system.
