Assignment Week # 0

This document provides instructions for a computer network lab assignment on using Wireshark. Students are asked to get acquainted with Wireshark by reading the manual and learning about its operational aspects. They then answer questions to demonstrate their understanding, such as listing protocols seen in Wireshark, finding the IP addresses of websites, measuring response times, and printing HTTP messages. The goal is to introduce students to Wireshark and have them explore its capabilities.

Computer Network Lab

(B.Tech. - CS/IT) 5th SEM

LAB Assignment (Week # 0)

The goal of this first lab was primarily to introduce you to Wireshark. The following
questions will demonstrate that youve been able to get Wireshark up and running,
and have explored some of its capabilities. Answer the following questions, based
on your Wireshark experimentation:

1. Get aquainted with Wireshark. Read the manual properly and learn about
different operational aspects of Wireshark.

2. On the basis of your understanding about Wireshark, answer the following:

a. List 3 different protocols that appear in the protocol column in the unfiltered
packet-listing.
b.What is the Internet address of the www.mnnit.ac.in? What is the Internet
address of your computer? [for better learning you can access some other
websites also]
c. How long did it take from when the HTTP GET message was sent until the
HTTP OK reply was received? (By default, the value of the Time column in the
packetlisting window is the amount of time, in seconds, since Wireshark tracing
began. To display the Time field in time-of-day format, select the Wireshark View
pull down menu, then select Time Display Format, then select Time-of-day.)
d. Print the two HTTP messages (GET and OK) referred to in 2(c) above. To do
so, select Print from the Wireshark File command menu, and select the Selected
Packet Only and Print as displayed radial buttons, and then click OK

Note: In every LAB session you will be evaluated in last one hour based on
what you have done. So try to learn as much as possible. Your learning will
be reflected in your grades.
