Tutorial On EE320

This document contains 6 problems related to signal processing concepts: 1. Prove an identity for the Hilbert transform. 2. Show the relationship between the autocorrelation function and the Fourier transform of a real signal. 3. Determine the autocorrelation of a multi-tone periodic signal and discuss if any information is lost. 4. Calculate the autocorrelation of a Gaussian pulse. 5. Determine and plot the spectrum of modified versions of a signal given its original Fourier transform shape. 6. Calculate the magnitude response of an N-stage RC low-pass filter and show its behavior approaches a Gaussian for large N.

1. Prove the following Hilbert transform:

1 HT t
.
1 + t2 1 + t2

2. Let G(f ) denote the Fourier transform of a real-valued signal g(t) and
Rg ( ) its autocorrelation function. Show that

dRg ( ) 2
Z Z
d = 4 2 4

d f 2 |G(f )| df.
= f =

3. Consider a signal gp (t) defined by

gp (t) = A0 + A1 cos(2f1 t + ) + A2 cos(2f2 t + )

which is given to be periodic with a period of T0 .

(a) Determine the autocorrelation Rgp ( )
(b) Is any information lost in obtaining Rgp ( )?
4. Determine the autocorrelation of the Gaussian pulse given by:

g(t) = exp 2 .
t0 t0

X(f )

W 0 W

Figure 1: X(f ).

5. Assume that the Fourier transform of x(t) has the shape as shown in
Figure 1. Determine and plot the spectrum of each of the following signals:
(a) x1 (t) = (3/4)x(t) + (1/4)j x(t)
(b) x2 (t) = [(3/4)x(t) + (3/4)j x(t)] ej 2f0 t
(c) x3 (t) = [(3/4)x(t) + (1/4)j x(t)] ej 2W t

6. Consider N stages of the RC-lowpass filter as illustrated in Figure 2.

(a) Compute the magnitude response |Vo (f )/Vi (f )| of the overall cascade
connection. The current drawn by the buffers is zero.
(b) Show that the magnitude response in the vicinity of f = 0, ap-
proaches a Gaussian function given by exp((N/2)4 2 f 2 R2 C 2 ), for
large values of N .
