ECommerce2016Part1:ASEANOpensUp
Danielle Beurteaux (http://www.digitalistmag.com/author/daniellebeurteaux)

Think of e-commerce in Asia, and China probably comes to mind. With an average of 10 GPD growth per year (http://www.worldbank.org/en/country/china/overview) that
created a large middle class (http://money.cnn.com/2015/10/14/news/economy/china-middle-class-growing/) with a taste for consumption
(http://www.economist.com/news/special-report/21663328-booming-middle-class-creating-worlds-most-dynamic-consumer-market-wild-wild), it represent an enormous
e-commerce market. But Chinas economy is slowing down, with October logging the lowest level of growth (http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2015/10/19/chinas-
economic-growth-declines-to-6-year-low.html)since 2009. Shopping, however, has kept up the pace, with increases in retail sales and a 36% increase in e-commerce sales
during Q3 2015 compared to 2014.

But there are concerns that retail and e-commerce arent enough to offset Chinas evolving economy (http://www.npr.org/2015/11/12/455717478/can-e-commerce-pump-
up-chinas-economy), and some contend that Chinas e-commerce market is already too saturated (http://techcrunch.com/2015/06/22/forget-china-theres-an-e-
commerce-gold-rush-in-southeast-asia/#.a7zu5g3:veRO) for new entrants. Plus much of Chinas e-commerce market has been built domestically
(http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/international-business/asian-pacific-business/how-chinas-strict-content-controls-led-to-an-innovative-e-
commerce-platform/article27059893/)think Alibaba and WeChat because government controls have meant its been difficult or impossible for foreign entities to gain
entry to the market, although its perhaps easier than maintaining a physical retail presence (http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/5c1b72b8-78b7-11e5-933d-
efcdc3c11c89.html#axzz3sS7flGLc). Further development of domestic technology and e-commerce is being encouraged in the hopes that it will compensate for the weaker
segments of the economy.

Where will the next big e-commerce markets be in 2016? ThinkAssociation of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries, where until recently laws and logistics made e-
commerce operations challenging.

According to a recent Euromonitor report, ASEAN member countries are primed forrobust e-commerce growth (http://blog.euromonitor.com/2015/09/qa-understanding-
the-asean-consumer.html): The region has a young population, expanding middle class, increasing Internet connectivity, rising smartphone penetration, and greater
payment options, all of which are favourable for the growth of e-commerce.

A commonality of ASEAN markets is the low level of e-commerce activity, but the high use of mobile phones for shopping (http://retail.economictimes.indiatimes.com/re-
tales/future-of-e-commerce-in-emerging-markets-like-india/986).

Indonesia
There are indications that Indonesia will be open to foreign investment (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-10-23/indonesia-may-open-e-commerce-movies-
to-foreigners-by-mid-2016) and ownership in 2016, including in the area of e-commerce. There are currently restrictions on foreign economic activity in the country, due to
various factors, but President Joko Widodo reportedly wants to open the country up in order to stimulate its sluggish economy. Indonesia is ASEANs sixth-largest economy,
and has a high percentage of Internet and social media users.

Widodo paid a visit to Silicon Valley (http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/10/21/us-indonesia-president-usa-tech-idUSKCN0SF2PC20151021) last October with the aim
of interesting private investors in Indonesias e-commerce and the countrys own startups.

Thailand
Thailand has a young, affluent, tech-savvy generation with a taste for luxury spending (http://www.luxurydaily.com/4-hot-markets-for-international-luxury-ecommerce/).
International and domestic retailers are beginning to enter into Thailand e-commerce, hoping to be the ones to jump start the sector with mobile e-commerce
(https://www.techinasia.com/zilingo-mobile-ecommerce/) and platforms to make shopping on mobile easy.

With a predicted 35% increase in e-commerce activity in 2016, Thailand could be one of the busiest markets in the ASEAN region.

Singapore
Singapore is another ASEAN member with a high level of Internet users but little e-commerce activity. But that could be changing. Japanese e-commerce company Rakuten
opened an office there last summer (http://www.straitstimes.com/business/rakuten-opens-research-centre-in-spore). Called the Rakuten Institute of Technology (there
are others in Boston, New York, Tokyo, and Paris), its where Rakuten does its research and development. The branch in Singapore will research consumer behavior
(http://techcrunch.com/2015/07/29/rakuten-it/).

In an interesting multi-channel concept, Singapore Post is developing a shopping mall (http://enterpriseinnovation.net/article/shopping-mall-e-commerce-logistics-

services-rise-singapore-1210418628) that will combine brick and mortar retail with e-commerce. Shoppers will be able to buy in-store but have their purchases shipped.
Whether the level of convenience and novelty this model creates will be enough to encourage digital buying in the country remains to be seen.

5EmployeeProductivityToolsForStartups
Robert Cordray (http://www.digitalistmag.com/author/robertcordray)

The announcement last month that Target Canada is closing 133 stores
(http://www.slate.com/blogs/moneybox/2015/01/15/target_closing_in_canada_these_pictures_show_why_it_failed.html) leaving over 17,000 employees without jobs
serves as a sobering reminder that no business, no matter how big or well funded, is guaranteed success.

For new business startups its critical for entrepreneurs with multiple employees, and solopreneurs in an office of one, to use every available tool and resource to maximize
productivity and gain a competitive edge. Entrepreneurs need to be challenging the status quo and constantly improving the rate of production. To that end, heres a look at
five effective employee productivity tools for business startups.

Trello(https://trello.com/)

Better collaboration means better productivity. And Trello is a free and highly visual online collaboration tool that organizes
projects into lists of lists with cards on a virtual board. The cards may be dragged and dropped between lists to show how
a project is progressing. Being a visual tool, Trello provides entrepreneurs a view of whats being worked on, which
employees are working on what, and what progress has been made, all at a glance.

But Trello isnt just an interactive project management solution for groups. It also works for individuals. Tim Maurer, a
successful financial consultant and regular contributor on Forbes.com
(http://www.forbes.com/sites/timmaurer/2013/11/21/7-steps-to-creating-the-best-personal-task-management-system-
with-trello/), says in a recent post that Trello, has become my highly-individualized, personal task management system of
choice.

RescueTime(https://www.rescuetime.com/)

Nothing eats away at productivity like time waste. This is especially true for entrepreneurs and solopreneurs who need to make every moment at work count. Rescue Time, a
free software program installed on a computer, helps bosses and employees increase productivity by tracking productive time. Along with monitoring activities throughout
the day, Rescue Time allows users to set goals and track progress, track time spent both on and offline, block access to distracting, time-wasting websites, and see what
apps and websites were used during the day. Using a metric called productivity pulse, Rescue Time measures daily time productivity on a scale of very distracting, to very
productive, to produce an overall score that indicates just how productive the users day actually was. Based on those scores, workers can make adjustments to improve the
productivity of their time.
productivity of their time.

DropboxforBusiness(https://www.dropbox.com/business)

This very popular file-sharing desktop and mobile app is already a hit among consumers. And now more and more startup entrepreneurs are discovering Dropbox for
Business as a software tool to make productivity soar. With work these days occurring on multiple devices, the Dropbox app makes it easy and convenient for workers to
sync important work documents across all platforms for easy retrieval on the device of their choice, whenever and wherever they may be. With more than 50% of IT
business professional disclosing that they will be deploying a personal cloud (http://www.solarwinds.com/resources/infographics/dont-get-caught-in-the-blender.aspx) for
workplace purposes, its clear that options like Dropbox are needed for everyday business. And the ability to create shared folders, and choose which team members may
access those folders to work on documents, makes Dropbox for Business a great collaboration tool.

Mailbox(http://mailboxapp.com/)

As pointed out by a number of business productivity professionals, although rummaging through email boxes may present the illusion of being productive, it is anything but.
Thats where Mailbox, a mobile email management tool, comes in handy. Designed by developers who realized that todays business professionals are always on the go,
Mailbox uses colorful swipe-based features, enabling entrepreneurs on the move to view and prioritize email on their smartphones or tablets. Mailbox is available for OSX,
iPhone, iPad, and Android. Its also been recently integrated with Dropbox to facilitate the quick and easy attachment of files while composing emails.

Bitrix24.com(http://www.bitrix24.com/)

The problem with many software collaboration tools is that they are not all that easy for employees to use. Thats why many small businesses are heading to internal
websites known as the social intranet. Free to startups and more established businesses with 12 employees or less, Bitrix24.com has emerged as the fastest growing social
intranet for business. Featuring a combination of work tools such as CRM, project management, file sharing, activity planning and real-time streaming, Bitrix24.com has
collaboration covered from all angles. It also has the advantage of being a cloud-based app, which allows employee access from anywhere and on any device.

From the founding solopreneur or entrepreneur on down, todays business startups need to take advantage of every tool they can to turn those young margins green
(http://www.itbriefcase.net/increasing-sales-and-decreasing-cost-using-current-business-data). While the above list of productivity tools is by no means definitive, it serves
as a very good place for startups to start.

TheDigitalEconomy:Disruption,Transformation,Opportunity
Michael Clarke (http://www.digitalistmag.com/author/michaelclarke)

Bottom line: digitization and the Internet of Things (IoT) are changing the world at an
unprecedented rate. Companies looking to succeed in the emerging digital economy
must transform themselves by reinventing their business models, strategies,
processes, and practices.

What is the digital economy? Its the economic activity that results from billions of
everyday online connections among people, businesses, devices, data, and processes.
Knowing how to manage, extract value, and make decisions based on those
connections may seem daunting, but its a crucial executive task. Success will depend
connections may seem daunting, but its a crucial executive task. Success will depend
entirely on how companies can transform themselves digitally to harvest the
opportunities of this data-driven, hyperconnected environment, says Dinesh Sharma,
Vice President of Portfolio Marketing at SAP.

Such transformation also requires ongoing enterprise reorganization and the blurring
of once strictly defined employee roles. Even the nature of accountability is changing, Sharma says:

New tools and processes will empower employees to routinely make crucial decisions with lessor nored tape. This will help make organizations nimble enough to meet
their customers ever-changing demands.

Hyperconnectivity: The growing interconnectedness of people, organizations, and machines that results from the Internet, mobile technology and the Internet of
Things; the backbone of the Digital Economy.

Adisruptivequartet.
The digital economy is driving disruption in four areas that business leaders must address:

1)Employees: CxOs must manage increasingly dynamic distributed workforces. For example, millennialstodays youngest employeesare driving the growing contingent-
labor trend because they expect to be able to work remotely or hold multiple jobs simultaneously. Organizations must also develop next-generation digital business
processes and train all employees to use them effectively, from anywhere, at any time.

2)Customers: Today, B2B and B2C customers alike want companies to interact with them seamlessly, on demand, whenever and however its most convenient. They also
crave direct, contextual, personalized experiences. Thats why all employees must be armed with the data they need to make real-time decisions. The days of just selling a
product and counting profits are gone, Sharma notes. Now, success is measured by customer loyalty, which must be earned every day.

3)Suppliers: To enable truly next-generation commerce, enterprises must securely capture, analyze, and share data in real time and at multiple points of contact. Today,
businesses outsource tasks to specialty providers, so the single, integrated company of 20 years ago is history, Sharma says. But you must still enforceprocesses across
the complete value chain.

4)Assets: The convergence of the physical and digital worlds brings every asset into the digital domain. Organizations that understand both their physical and digital asset
inventories can operate at new levels of precision, allowing them to better serve customers and quickly, effectively collaborate with both internal andexternal stakeholders,
Sharma says.

Success will depend entirely on how companies can transform themselves digitally to harvest the opportunities of this data-driven, hyperconnected environment.

Thedigitalcore.
Success in the digital economy involves more than just eliminating traditional structured job roles and reimagining processes. CxOs also need to rethink their
infrastructures.

At the heart of any digital transformation is the concept of a digital core that will effortlessly connect business, people, devices, data, and processes across your workforce,
supplier network, customers, and markets, Sharma says. The digital cores sophisticated technology removes the burden of running legacy technologyinfrastructures,
outdated processes, and isolated data so that you can run simple in this new economy.

With an effective digital core, CxOs can reinvent their organizations, allowing their stakeholders to easily make rapid, seamless connections and ending the era of the
conventional disjointed, silo-ed enterprise. But business leaders must also extend such efforts beyond their own organizations, Sharma notes: In the digital economy, the
entire value chain must be digitized.

Keystosuccess.
SAP recommends these five principles for developing an effective digital strategy:

1. Emphasize outcome-based customer experience.

2. Integrate core processes and real-time analytics to enable simpler, smarter, faster work.
3. Support an empowered, highly engaged workforce.
4. Collaborate with suppliers to accelerate growth.
5. Use the IoT to connect and leverage digital and physical assets to drive up-tothe-moment insights for smarter, faster decision making.

To win, organizations must innovate, Sharma adds. Specifically, SAP recommends three approaches:

Reimagine business models. Expand beyond traditional industry boundaries. Make the leap from an asset-based enterprise to a service- or outcome-based organization,
as the ride-sharing service Uber has done. Focus on what your organization offers in the supply chain and what makes sense to outsource. Identify valuable strategic
partnerships.
Reimagine business processes. Update or eliminate processes that dont support digitization. Exploit hyperconnectivity, agility, and real-time access to digital assets to
reinvent business processes routinely, not just now and then. For instance, adapt inventory-management and manufacturing processes to keep up with changing
customer preferences, and improve collaborations with strategic partners.
Reimagine workforce productivity. Improve existing processes to provide real-time information for better decision making. Use your digital core to empower employees
and reduce the number of steps they must take to complete their work. Give them the best, most advanced tools with the simplest interfaces.

AmazingDigitalMarketingTrendsAndTipsToExpandYourBusinessIn
2015
Sunny Popali (http://www.digitalistmag.com/author/billbrown)

The fast-paced world of digital marketing is changing too quickly for most companies to adapt. But staying up to date with
the latest industry trends is imperative for anyone involved with expanding a business.

Here are five trends that have shaped the industry this year and that will become more important as we move forward:

1. Emailmarketingwillneedtobecomesmarter

Whether you like it or not, email is the most ubiquitous tool online. Everyone has it, and utilizing it properly can push your
marketing ahead of your rivals. Because business use of email is still very widespread, you need to get smarter about email
marketing in order to fully realize your businesss marketing strategy. Luckily, there are a number of tools that can help you
market more effectively, such as Mailchimp.

2. Contentmarketingwillbecomeintegratedandmorevaluable

Content is king, and it seems to be getting more important every day. Google and other search engines are focusing more on the content you create as the potential of the
online world as marketing tool becomes apparent. Now there seems to be a push for current, relevant content that you can use for your services and promote your business.

Staying fresh with the content you provide is almost as important as ensuring high-quality content. Customers will pay more attention if your content is relevant and timely.

3. Mobileassetsandpaidsocialmediaaremoreimportantthanever

Its no secret that mobile is key to your marketing efforts. More mobile devices are sold and more people are reading content on mobile screens than ever before, so it is
crucial to your overall strategy to have mobile marketing expertise on your team. London-based Abacus Marketing (http://www.abacusmarketing.co.uk/) agrees that
mobile marketing could overtake desktop website marketing in just a few years.

4. BigDataforpersonalizationplaysakeyrole
Marketers are increasingly using Big Data to get their brand message out to the public in a more personalized format. One obvious example is Google Trend analysis, a highly
useful tool that marketing experts use to obtain the latest on what is trending around the world. You can and should use it in your business marketing efforts. Big Data
will also let you offer specific content to buyers who are more likely to look for certain items, for example, and offer personalized deals to specific groups of within your
customer base. Other tools, which until recently were the stuff of science fiction, are also available that let you do things like use predictive analysis to score leads.

5. Visualmediamatters

A picture really is worth a thousand words, as the saying goes, and nobody can deny the effectiveness of a well-designed infographic. In fact, some studies suggest that
Millennials are particularly attracted to content with great visuals. Animated gifs and colorful bar graphs have even found their way into heavy-duty financial reports, so why
not give them a try in your business marketing efforts?

A few more tips:

Always keep your content relevant and current to attract the attention of your target audience.
Always keep all your social media and public accounts fresh. Dont use old content or outdated pictures in any public forum.
Your reviews are a proxy for your online reputation, so pay careful attention to them.
Much online content is being consumed on mobile now, so focus specifically on the design and usability of your mobile apps.
Online marketing is essentially geared towards getting more traffic onto your site. The more people visit, the better your chances of increasing sales.

Top3DriversOfSupplyChainTransformation
Richard Howells (http://www.digitalistmag.com/author/richard-howells)

Manufacturing supply chains are experiencing levels of change heretofore unprecedented in their history, according to a recent IDC Manufacturing Insights white paper
titled The Extended Supply Chain.

In the paper, author Simon Ellis posits that the future of the supply chain is one of an outwardly networked and collaborative organization that fully integrates supply chain
with design, manufacturing, and asset management into an extended supply chain that is able to respond quickly and accurately.

In order to transform existing supply chains into extended supply chains, Mr. Ellis explains that organizations must prioritize the following three drivers of change:

1.Customercentricity:puttingconsumersattheforefrontofyourbusiness

Gaining visibility of actual demand and increasing the speed of response will be the key to improving customer-centricity. Supply chains must be not only accurate but
timely, whether we are talking about the time it takes to bring new products to market, the time it takes to process and deliver an order, or the time it takes to manage
returns.

Todays customers are more connected, informed, and demanding than ever. They want the ability to order from any device, anywhere, at any time. In other words, they
want complete omnichannel capabilities.

2.Individualizedproducts:Realizingthelotsizeofone

As the paper states, Most manufacturing supply chains have been designed for the mass-market reseller, moving full pallets on full trucks, and have operated as such
throughout much of their history. Yet these businesses are now facing the challenge of smaller cases or even units, LTL or parcel shipments, and high levels of
customization all things that the current supply chain is poorly equipped to manage.
customization all things that the current supply chain is poorly equipped to manage.

Enabling customers to personalize orders is a major business driver. Today, consumers can go online and purchase almost any individualized item they desire, from cars
and chocolate to sneakers (http://www.digitalistmag.com/digital-economy/2016/01/18/how-high-will-supply-chain-jump-to-build-customer-centric-processes-
03941917) and spaghetti. But this requires companies to reimagine how they design, plan, manufacture, and deliver products.

3.Collaboration:Respondingquicklyandaccuratelytocustomerneeds

As supply chains become more global and distributed, collaboration becomes a vital component of the digital extended supply chain. To be able to respond quickly and
accurately to customers requires establishing a network of partners, people, and assets.

According to IDC, the successful future supply chain will require demand-aware demand networks, supply-visible supply networks, and innovation-connected
product networks. This will inevitably evolve into a network of partners that can play multiple roles in designing, planning, manufacturing, delivering, and servicing
products brought to market.

If youd like to learn more about the future of supply chains, I invite you to attend a webinar on February 18: Disruptions in Supply Chain Are You Ready for 2016? In the
session, Simon Ellis of IDC and Hans Thalbauer, SVP for Extended Supply Chain at SAP, will discuss:

Why the current supply chain is poorly equipped to manage high levels of customization
Why the future of the supply chain is one of an outwardly networked and collaborative organization that will sit at the center of three lobes a demand network
(demand-aware), a supply network (supply-visible), and a product network (innovation-connected)
How cloud-based business-to-business platforms and other technologies are key enablers to reimagining operations and the supply chain
