NAME OF EXPERIMENT: TORSION TEST OF A GIVEN SAMPLE
OBJECTIVE:
To carry out a torsion test to destruction in order to determine the following properties for a specimen.
APPARATUS:
Torsion Testing Machine,
Torsiometer,
Micrometer
Standard torsion specimen for use with the torsion testing machine and torsiometer.
THEORY:
A torsion test is quite instrumental in determining the value of modulus of rigidity of metallic specimen.
From the general torsion theory for a circular specimen.

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE
1. Select the driving dogs to suit the size of the specimen and clamp it in the machine by adjusting
the length of the specimen by means of sliding spindle.
2. Measure the test diameter at about three places and take the average value of the specimen.
5. Set the protractor to zero for convenience and clamp it by means of knurled screw.
6. Draw a line down the length of the degree of the section of the specimen with a pencil this
serves as a visual aid to the degree of twist being put on the specimen during loading.
7. Mount the specimen firmly in the Torsion Testing Machine as indicated in the operating
instruction.
8. Load the machine in suitable increments, observing and recording strain readings.
11. Read off coordinates of a convenient point from the straight line portion of the torque- twist
graph and calculate the value of C by using relation.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:
1. Use equipment for the purpose it is designated to.
2. Use appropriate gloves.
3. Avoid use of contact lenses.
4. Avoid long hair, loose sleeve, ornaments in close proximity of open flames or operating
machinery.
5. Inspect or have inspected any instruments before use.
6. Always use lab coat in laboratory.
7. If in confusion, ask the instructor.

DISCUSSION OF RESULTS:
1. State and comment upon the values obtained from the test.
2. Comment upon the overall result obtained from the test.
3. Comment upon the apparatus and procedure.
4. Discuss the errors involved in determining the modules rigidity using the angle of twist from the
machine dial.
