MATH 1442: Elementary Statistical Methods

Project

In this project you will perform a hypothesis test to compare the means of two populations.
Be sure to show all your work neatly.

Instructions

The cholesterol level of patients who had heart attacks was measured two days after the heart attack and then
again four days after the heart attack. The researchers want to see if the cholesterol level of patients who have
heart attacks reduces as the time since their heart attack increases. The data is listed in table 1. At 1% significance
level, do the data show that the mean cholesterol level of patients that have had a heart attack reduces as the time
increases since their heart attack?

Your score will be determined by how well the instructions were followed and how well the solution is
written, in addition to the correctness of your answer.

Turning in Your Solution

To receive full credit for your solution it must be submitted in PDF format. To convert your handwritten solution to a PDF
file follow the instructions in either paragraph 1 or 2a.

1. You can scan the paper and save the file as a PDF file. If the scanner produces image files (such as JPG files) instead of
PDF files, then treat the images files as pictures and follow the instructions in step 2b. The paper can be scanned with a
home scanner, or you can usually find scanners you are allowed to use at local libraries, schools, or office supply stores
(such as Staples or Office Depot). Open the PDF file and make sure that it is readable.

2a. You can use your phone to take a picture of each page of your paper. To make sure that each picture is legible you
may need to increase the resolution settings on your phones camera. After taking the pictures, be sure to look at them and
make sure that they can be read. Then send them to a desktop computer.

2b. Open a new MS Word document, and insert each picture (in order) into the document. Save the document as a PDF
file to turn it in.

Once you have your paper in a readable PDF file, follow the directions found in the document MATH 1442
Mathematics Assessment to submit your assignment. Your score will be posted on Blackboard once your solution has
been evaluated.
