Panasonic Celebrates Life at The Singapore Artscience Museum

The document discusses an art installation at the Singapore ArtScience Museum called "Celebration of Life" that used 3D projection mapping. Singaporean artist Justin Lee collaborated with Marina Bay Sands and Panasonic to bring his pop art motifs to life through advanced projection technology. Panasonic's PT-DZ21K 3-Chip DLP projectors were used due to their high brightness and ability to project over long distances and in portrait mode, allowing the art to be projected onto the museum's unusual lotus petal-shaped facade. The project involved precise alignment of 16 projectors using geometry software to create an immersive 3D visual experience for visitors during the i Light Marina Bay light festival.

PANASONIC
CELEBRATES LIFE
AT THE SINGAPORE
ARTSCIENCE MUSEUM

Throughout the month of March, visitors at the Singapore

ArtScience Museum were treated to a beautiful visual display
of pop-art, entitled Celebration of Life, as part of the i Light
Marina Bay 2014 event Asias only sustainable light art festival.
Singaporean artist, Justin Lee, collaborated with Marina Bay Sands
and Panasonic Systems Asia Pacific to bring this 3D projection-
mapping showcase to life.

The installation was a playful, tongue-in-cheek commentary on

the role and values of traditional Asian culture in contemporary
society. Through the use of pop-art as a playful medium, this
installation was a celebration of Asian values in the context of a
modern society. In this 3D projection showcase for the ArtScience
Museum, Justin playfully blended traditional Eastern iconography
with modern-day symbols of our global capitalist culture. This
approach suggested cultural resilience the ability of Asian culture
to survive, to withstand, to endure and to adapt to the changing
ways of contemporary society.

Singapore is a young nation that has a blend

of Eastern and Western culture sort of like
a marriage, explained Justin, who has been
an artist for the past 12 to 13 years. This
embodiment forms much of the inspiration
behind my art. So I think my work is suited
for this project because it involves our country
and its culture from the way we talk to the
way we dress. I think its good to play a part in
this celebration of life.

This is also a challenge for me as an artist

because this would be the first time Im using
my motifs and icons and transforming them
into moving images. It helps to extend my
body of work to another level.

Anyone who has ever seen the ArtScience

Museum would know of how unusual this
building is its faade has a unique shape
fashioned after lotus petals. In addition, the
Marina Bay is located directly in front of it.
These two factors posed quite a challenge for
the creative team because both the shape and
location of the museum somewhat limited the
space for projector installation. The installers
had to figure out how and where to place the
projectors in order to ensure optimal projection
onto the museums unusual faade.

Using the ET-D75LE30 enabled

long-distance projection
across the Marina Bay.

Such a challenging requirement meant the technical/

system engineers from Dorier Asia Pacific Pte Ltd had
to use the strongest possible projectors to ensure the
moving images projected were clean, crisp and accurate
in came Panasonics PT-DZ21K 3-Chip DLP TM flagship
projectors. Boasting a brightness of 20,000 lumens, the
PT-DZ21K ensured high brightness and picture quality,
while also enabling a host of creative capabilities for the
project organisers. In addition, the wide range of available
lenses allowed the PT-DZ21K to project over a variety of
distances, which was ideal for this installation considering
the museums location right next to the bay and unusual
shape.

There were 16 projectors in total, which were grouped and

strategically placed in three specific locations so as to
project the moving images perfectly onto each of the three
odd-shaped petals that were used in the installation. Seven
of the projectors were mounted on the other side of the
Marina Bay to enable long-distance projection across the
body of water.

This projector is light-efficient and consists of a unique

quad-lamp system, which results in lower power consumption
and longer lifespan, explained Hirotatsu Asai, Manager of
the Professional Audio Video Department at Panasonic. And
it was this light-efficient quality, he continued, that proved
suitable for the theme of the i Light Marina Bay 2014 festival,
which called for sustainable light art installations.

Another technical feature to this projector is

its ability to project images in portrait mode.
Typical projections are often on a landscape
orientation, but this was not the case for the
installation as the petals of the museum are
long. This particular function was one of the
reasons the PT-DZ21K was chosen for this
project as it made it possible to cover the
entire area of each petal.

Prior to the official launch of the installation,

the technical/system engineers had to acquire
the layout of the museum from Marina Bay
Sands and perform grid alignment work by
using lasers to project onto the museums
outer surface. This was to allow them to
better estimate the curvature of the faade.
It was then that they could decide how many
projectors were required and where to place
them to ensure good quality images and high
brightness.

For this showcase, Panasonic also used

its Geometry Manager Pro software to help

determine the accuracy of the projectors and
the images involved.

Hirotatsu explained: In order to fully realise

the projection mapping, we needed to match
the image from (each of) the projectors to
determine the brightness. So if we find that one
projector is not providing enough brightness,
well have to use another projector and match
the images from both projectors. The Geometry
Manager Pro makes it easier for us to do this.

While concept planning for the project

took place all the way back in October the
previous year, the creative team was only
able to physically set up the projectors and
perform grid alignment a few days before the
media preview of the installation in March.
Despite the rather limited time, the projection
proved a visually-arresting 3D showcase and
a fantastic addition to the i Light Marina Bay
2014 line-up.
