Assignment 2
Assignment 2
Problem 1:
A volume of 900 veh/h is observed at an intersection approach. Find the peak rate of flow within the
hour for the following peak-hour factors: 1.00, 0.90, 0.80, 0.70. Plot and comment on the results.
Solution:
We know,

1 900 900
0.9 900 1000
0.8 900 1125
0.7 900 1285.71

Problem 2:
The AADT for a given highway section is 25,000 veh/day. If the route is classified as an urban radial
roadway, what range of directional design hour volumes would be expected?
Solution:
K-factor= 0.95
D-factor=0.575
Problem 3:
The following counts were taken on an intersection approach during the morning peak hour. Determine
(a) the hourly volume, (b) the peak rate of flow within the hour, and (c) the peak hour factor.
(a) The hourly volume = 150+ 155+ 165+ 160 =630 veh/hour
(b) Peak rate of flow within the hour= 4*165 = 660 veh/hour
(c) Peak hour factor= hourly volume/peak rate of flow = 0.95
Problem 4:
The table below shows the volumetric data collected at an intersection. Calculate the peak hour volume,
peak hour factor (PHF) and the actual (design) flow rate for this approach.

The following traffic count data were taken from a permanent detector location.
From this information what can be discerned about the character of the facility and the demand it
serves?

Problem 6:
The following data was collected during a study of two arterial lanes. Estimate the continuous 15-minute
counts for the two lane roadway as a whole. Find the peak hour, and compute the PHF.
