Problem 1:

A volume of 900 veh/h is observed at an intersection approach. Find the peak rate of flow within the
hour for the following peak-hour factors: 1.00, 0.90, 0.80, 0.70. Plot and comment on the results.

Solution:

We know,

peak hour factor= hourly volume/max. hourly volume

max. hourly volume= hourly volume/peak hour factor

Problem 2:

The AADT for a given highway section is 25,000 veh/day. If the route is classified as an urban radial
roadway, what range of directional design hour volumes would be expected?

Solution:

For urban radial roadway,

K-factor= 0.95

D-factor=0.575

DDHV= AADT*K*D =25000*0.95*0.575 = 13657 veh/hour

Problem 3:

The following counts were taken on an intersection approach during the morning peak hour. Determine
(a) the hourly volume, (b) the peak rate of flow within the hour, and (c) the peak hour factor.

Time Period Volume

8:00-8:15 AM 150
8:15-8:30 AM 155
8:30-8:45 AM 165
8:45-9:00 AM 160
Solution:

(a) The hourly volume = 150+ 155+ 165+ 160 =630 veh/hour
(b) Peak rate of flow within the hour= 4*165 = 660 veh/hour
(c) Peak hour factor= hourly volume/peak rate of flow = 0.95

Problem 4:

The table below shows the volumetric data collected at an intersection. Calculate the peak hour volume,
peak hour factor (PHF) and the actual (design) flow rate for this approach.
