I was born different, but that doesnt stop me from living my life, and Im happy.
I love soccer so much, and I dont play as well as others, of course. But you
know, in the World Cup there is so much anticipation and excitement thats
stirs up in all of us and everyone cheers for this success of ther owm team. And
you know in all games there is losing and winning, people who moan over, you
know, their team not winning, and then people who get so excited when they
win
Ive missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. Ive lost almost 300 games. 26
times Ive been trusted to take the game winning shotand missed. Ive failed over
and over and over again in my lifeand that is why I succeed. Michael Jordan
was one of the greatest athletes of all time, but like all great people, he also failed
regularly. Watching Michael Jordan play basketball was like watching a man fly.
His grace and talent were unmatched. Clearly he had a lifetime of training and
incredible natural talent, but these werent the only things that made him great. He
also had a healthy relationship with failure. Like many greats in sports and
business, he wasnt discouraged by failure. The shots he missed and the games
that he lost didnt make him give up. He knew that failure was just another chance
for him to improve.
Many highly successful people in the world of sports and business have this
healthy relationship with failure. One of the worlds most famous inventors, Thomas
Edison made thousands of attempts at creating a light bulb. He tried hundreds of
materials for the light bulb filament, but there was always a problem. Some would
burn out. Others would explode. Some would melt the glass. There were always
problems, but he never gave up and he never saw his failure as a failure. He just
saw it as a step towards success. Edison once said, I have not failed. I have
merely found 10,000 ways that wont work. This attitude of seeing failure as a
learning experience helped him persevere. This way of thinking eventually led him
to Japan, where he found a kind of bamboo, which was the perfect material for his
light bulb invention.
MAX:
I can't believe Tom Redman's lived here for over tenyears now. I can't imagine living here that long. Youknow
what he told me about Clifford? He said thatwhen Clifford first moved in here he just kept himselfbusy with sma
ll little chores all day and that theyactually used to chat quite a bit. I don't believe it, buthey that was a long time
ago.
MAX:
Now, I don't think Clifford has any social skills. Imean he's a real hermit. He doesn't seem to haveany friends a
nd I've never seen any family visit him. But hey, I guess as long as you're happy with yourway of life. It's all that
matters, right?
Still, sometimes I just wonder how he got the job inthe first place.
