Format for Financial Statements Analysis (group project)

Form a team of up to a maximum of five members. Each team has to choose a lead company and two of
its competitors. All three companies must
(1) be listed in either the National Stock Exchange or the Bombay Stock Exchange;
(2) have business focused largely in one industry [ITC does not meet this criteria];
(3) not belong to electricity, real estate, banking, insurance, or financial sector;
(4) have five annual reports for fiscal years (31-03-2011 to 31-03-2015) available on their website .

Before choosing a company and two of its competitors, please download all the fifteen annual reports.
Within a section, no two groups can select the same lead company. If two or more groups in a section
choose the same set of three companies, they all must have a different lead company. These groups may
discuss with each other; they however must clearly differentiate their work.

By 5 p.m. of Saturday, July 2nd, your class representative/s must email your CFR course instructor an
excel file containing team-wise details: team members, lead company, and two competitors. Once the
instructor approves your chosen company and its two competitors, it will be final and cannot be
changed. Non-submission of your analysis due to lack of data will result in zero points in the project
component.

You are required to evaluate these firms and ascertain the strength and weakness of your chosen
company vis--vis its competitor you have chosen. You must prepare a written report, with adequate
margins and properly formatted (amounts should be in Rupees crore and comma formatted with zero
decimal place). Your report will have two parts. Part 1 will be a two page write-up summarizing your
key findings in the second part. Part 2 will be a detailed one (up to 10 pages in length) and cover:
1. Brief company background and brief industry outlook (not more than one page)
2. Abridged Classified standalone Balance Sheet, Multi-step Income Statement, and Direct Method
Cash flows for last five years for each of the three firms.
3. Key accounting policies of the firm, which you think are important to highlight. (not more than
one page).
4. Overall interpretation of each standalone financial statement (Balance Sheet, P&L, and Cash
flows) - broad highlights on absolute numbers- without using any ratio. Spend more space for
analyzing cash flow statement (not more than one page).
5. Ratio Analyses (not more than one page).
6. Trend analysis, Common size analysis (using five year data) of key information from financial
statements (not more than one page).
7. Comparative Analysis: Compare the ratios and performance of the lead company with its
competitors. (not more than two pages).
8. Your assessment of its operating and financial performance and position (not more than one
page).
9. Your assessment of its operating and financial strengths and weakness (not more than one page).

Note: Your instructor will evaluate your teams project work based on the two page write up.
(S)he may refer to the detailed report (part 2) for any clarification. The project submission
deadline is August 3rd, Saturday, 5 pm on moodle.
