Spss Tutorial Compare Means

The document provides instructions for comparing means and determining correlation using SPSS. It includes steps to enter data, select variables, run descriptive statistics to compare means, and correlate variables to determine if there is a significant relationship. For comparing means, it shows the MAED students scored on average 6.75 in Research and 6.53 in Statistics, implying low pass scores. For correlation, it finds a moderate but not significant correlation between Research and Statistics exam performance, suggesting students who are good in one may not be good in the other.

SPSS TUTORIAL

COMPARE MEANS

Sample problem

1. What is the performance of the MAED students in the Research and Statistics
Comprehensive Examination?

Solution:

a. Enter data into SPSS (Data View) as shown below

b. Name the variable (ex. Research, Statistics) on the Variable View

c. After inputting all the data, click Analyse > Descriptive Statistics > Descriptive

d. As table below appears, enter the variables to compare the means (i.e RESEARCH,
STATISTICS) into the Dependent List as shown below. Click the arrow to enter the variables.
e. Click Options. Check Mean, Std. Deviation, Minimum and Maximum as shown below

f. Click Continue, then OK until the result as shown below is generated.

g. Interpret the result.

Table 1 presents the performance of the MAED students in the Research and Statistics
Comprehensive Examination. It reveals that the mean score in Research is 6.75 while
Statistics is 6.53. This implies that both exams are low pass. This further implies

2. Is there a significant relationship in the performance of the MAED students in the

Research and Statistics Comprehensive Examination?

Steps in analysing the data:

1. Enter all data into the Data View. (Disregard if using existing data)
2. Click Analyze > Correlate >Bivariate as shown below

3. Enter all the variables to correlate (i.e. Research, Statistics) as shown below. Click
Pearson, then OK.

4. The following table will be generated. Interpret.

Correlations

Research Statistics

Pearson Correlation 1 .238

Research Sig. (2-tailed) .205

N 30 30
Pearson Correlation .238 1

Statistics Sig. (2-tailed) .205

N 30 30

The table presents the performance of the MAED students in the Research and
Statistics Comprehensive Examination. It reveals that an r-value .238 is within the range 0.3-
0.5 which is described as low correlation. This implies that there is a moderate correlation
between the performance of the MAED students in the Research and Statistics
Comprehensive Examination, however, this correlation is not significant since the p-value
0.205 is higher than a p-value 0.05. Therefore, there is no significant relationship between
the performance of the MAED students in the Research and Statistics Comprehensive
Examination. This implies that students who are good in Research may not be good in
Statistics or those who are good in Statistics may not be good in Research.
