TT1 2016

This physics document contains 10 multiple choice questions about various concepts in mechanics. Question 1 involves calculating gravitational field strength and time of flight for an object on Ganymede's surface. Question 2 asks about Triton's orbital speed. Question 3 asks about the ratio of gravitational pulls of the Sun and Earth on the Moon. The remaining questions involve free body diagrams, equilibrium, projectile motion, circular motion, and velocity-time graphs.

Question 1 [5 marks]

Ganymede, one of the Galilean moon that orbits the Jupiter has a mass of 1.51023 and
a radius of 2600km.

a) Calculate the gravitational field strength on the surface of Ganymede.

b) If a 5.0 stone is thrown vertically up with initial velocity of 20/, what is the time
of flight of that stone?

Question 2 [4 marks]

Triton is the largest moon of Neptune with a mass of 2.141022 , orbiting the parent
planet with an orbital radius of 3.55108 . Find the speed of Triton if the mass of
Neptune is 1.021026 .

Question 3 [5 marks]

Using the information in the Formulae and Constants Sheet, find the ratio of the
gravitational pull of the sun on the moon to that of the earth on the moon. (Assume that
the distance of the moon from the sun is approximately the same as the distance of the
earth from the sun.)

Question 4 [5 marks]

Question 5 [4 marks]

A 400N child and a 300N child sit on either end of a 2.00m long seesaw. Where along the
seesaw should the pivot support be placed to ensure the seesaw remains in rotational
equilibrium?

Question 6 [12 marks]

An aircraft is flying horizontally with a constant speed of 6001 at an altitude of
5000. The upward (lift) force provided by the wings that is necessary to keep the
aircraft in level flight is 9.80104 .
a) Show that the mass of the aircraft must be 1.00104 .
[3 marks]

The pilot begins a turn by tilting the aircraft so that its wings are at 15.0 to the horizontal
as shown. Assume that the airspeed does not change, and that the size and angle to the
wing of the lift force remain constant.

b) Draw a free body diagram below labelling the forces acting on the aircraft. Ignore
drag/friction and thrust forces directed into and out of the page.
[2 marks]

c) Calculate the horizontal radius of the aircrafts turn, assuming the airspeed does not
change.
[5 marks]

d) Describe any effects that this turn will have on the altitude of the aircraft. No
calculations are required.
