Activity 2-Distance Measuring by Pacing

1) The document describes an exercise to measure the distances of three buildings on campus - the Academic Building, Duran Hall, and Administration Building - using pace factor. 2) The procedure involves pacing the distances between marked points while counting steps, and then calculating the distances using the individual's pace factor. 3) The results show that the paced distances were close to the actual taped distances, with relative precisions between 1/57 and 1/65, indicating the pacing method can accurately measure distances.

Exercise No.2

Distance Measuring by Pacing

Title

I. OBJECTIVES
To determine the measurement of the three Buildings in Camarines Sur Polytechnic
College (Duran Hall, Academic Building and Administration Building) by using pace
factor.
II. PROCEDURE
Select a point on the ground and mark it as point A. Place a range pole (if it has)/mark on
it.
Mark the end point of the building as point B.
For Correction;
Measure the length of the buildings from point A to endpoint B.
All members of the group should walk from A to B on the left side of the buildings and
should walk on the right side of the buildings from B to A. Hence, the group moves in a
clockwise direction walking back and forth. This is to avoid walking onto the others path
that would great affect ones pace factor estimate.
No two or more members should walk side by side or simultaneously, since ones pace
factor would be influenced by the other thereby not getting a good estimate of ones pace
factor.
Dont shout out loud when counting number of paces. This might affect the counting of the
other group members in your vicinity.
Repeat the trials at least 5 repetition and count the number of steps/paces.
Get the paced distance by using pace factor and number of paces.
Calculate the preciseness of your activity by using paced and taped distance.

VI. CALCULATION

For Academic Building:

a) Determining Average no. of PACES

Mean no. of paces = total no. of paces for 5trials / distance by pacing

x =
39+40+41+39+40
= 5
199
= 5

= 39.8paces

b) Determining Paced Distance

Pace Factor = Paced Distance / Mean no. of paces
Then Paced Distance=Pace Factor (Mean no. of paces)
PD= ()
= (0.926m/pace)(39.8paces)=36.85m

c) Determining Relative Precision

Relative Precision= (Taped Distance-Paced Distance) / Taped Distance

For Duran Hall:

a) Determining Average no. of PACES

Mean no. of paces = total no. of paces for 5trials / distance by pacing

x =

= 5
330
= 5

= 66paces

b) Determining Paced Distance

Pace Factor = Paced Distance / Mean no. of paces
Then Paced Distance=Pace Factor (Mean no. of paces)
PD= ()
= (0.926m/pace)(66paces)=61.12m

c) Determining Relative Precision

Relative Precision= (Taped Distance-Paced Distance) / Taped Distance

VII. OBSERVATION

It is significant to walk genuinely when calibrating ones pace and in pacing

distances. Care should be taken to walk along a straight line. A slight divergence to the
left or right of the line will definitely affect the accuracy of pacing. Also, an attempt to
make each step a predetermined length is tiring and will only give less accurate results.

VIII. CONCLUSION

To pace a distance it is necessary to first determine the length of ones pace. And
according to my preceding activity, the length of my ones pace is 0.926m/pace, which is
referring to pace factor. The distance of route can determine by using pace factor and
number of paces done. Obviously, committing errors are common in the activity.
