BDA655 Machine Learning and Knowledge Discovery

This document proposes a graduate course on Machine Learning and Knowledge Discovery. The 3 credit course would meet for 3 hours per week. Santosh Singh would coordinate the course offered through the School of Natural Sciences and Department of Big Data Analytics and Computational Science. The course would provide an overview of key machine learning concepts and techniques including linear models, kernel methods, Bayesian networks, and deep belief networks. Students would be assessed based on a midterm exam, final exam, and project, weighing 20%, 30%, and 50% respectively.

XI. COURSE CONTENT:

Overview
This course gives an overview of many concepts, techniques and algorithms in
machine learning, beginning with topics such as linear models of regression and
classification and ending with topics like Bayesian networks and deep belief
networks. This course will give the students the basic idea and intuition behind
modern machine learning methods as well as a bit more formal understanding of
how, why and when they work. The underlying theme in the course is statistical
inference as it provides the foundation for most of the methods covered.
