Tapper - Max Math Learning Utah 2017 6-8

This document discusses strategies for helping students who struggle with math. It emphasizes that intervention approaches should be tailored to each individual student's needs and understanding. Effective instruction focuses on having students do the work of solving problems in order to build their own understanding, rather than just learning predetermined strategies. Factors that can contribute to students struggling with math include cognitive challenges, as well as ineffective instruction that did not build on their prior knowledge or experiences or focus too much on packaged strategies. The document advocates listening to how each student approaches problems in order to understand their thinking and determine the best type of support. It also describes a project aimed at ensuring all students understand important math concepts by the end of each grade.

Might Do About It 6-8

Take-Aways for Today

Intervention is not one size fits all. We must understand

how each student makes sense of math to help him.

The best approach is the one that makes sense to the

student.
