Experiment 3: Name of Experiment: Rotational Speed Measurement Using Tachometer Objective

The 3 sentence summary is: This experiment measures the rotational speed of a shunt wound DC motor using a tachometer by varying both the field rheostat resistance and supply voltage and recording the motor speed. The experiment connects a DC power supply, motor, and tachometer, sets the field excitation, turns on the power and measures speed using the tachometer while adjusting the field rheostat and supply voltage. Speed measurements are recorded in a table with source voltage, current, and rotational speed.

Experiment 3

Name of Experiment: Rotational speed Measurement Using Tachometer

OBJECTIVE

To measure the speed of a shunt wound DC motor.

APPARATUS:

Power Supply
DC Metering
DC Motor/Generator
Hand Tachometer

PROCEDURE

1) Connect the following circuit. DO NOT APPLY POWER AT THIS TIME.

2) Set the shunt field rheostat control knob at its full clockwise position, for maximum
field excitation. Make sure the brushes are in their neutral position (90 and 0).

3) Turn on the power supply and adjust the voltage control to 230 V DC. Note the
direction of rotation. If it is not clockwise, turn OFF the power supply and swap the
connections across the shunt field. Then turn on the power supply.

4) Vary the field rheostat and measure the speed using tachometer.

5) Repeat the same procedure by keeping field resistance fixed and varying the supply
voltage.

6) Note down the speed for both conditions.

Source (Volts) Line Current (Amps) Speed (RPM)
