DC Compound Generator Loadtest

1) The document describes an experiment to test the characteristics of a DC compound generator and calculate its efficiency. Key equipment used includes a DC compound generator, voltmeters, ammeters, and a load box. 2) The procedure involves connecting the equipment, applying load in steps while maintaining motor speed, and recording voltage, current and power readings at each step. Plots of output power vs efficiency and voltage vs current are generated. 3) The results and conclusions determine whether the generator is cumulative or differential compound. Precautions like tight connections and proper cooling are noted.

Procedure:
1) Connect the circuit as per the given circuit diagram.
2) Initially, the value of motor field rheostat should be at minimum position
and generator shunt field rheostat should be at maximum position.
3) Close the DPST switch and switch on the supply.
4) Bring the motor to its rated speed by adjusting the motor field rheostat.
5) Note down the readings for no load condition.
6) Now, gradually increase the load from resistive load box in steps. At each
step, the speed of the motor is maintained at rated speed by adjusting the
motor rheostat.
7) Take the readings for different load values covering the range from no
load to little over full load.
8) Unload the generator. Bring the generator shunt field rheostat to
maximum position and motor field rheostat to minimum position.
9) Open the DPST switch and switch off the supply.

10) Reverse the connection of generator series field winding and repeat
from step 2 to 9.
11) Compare the values of the voltage for a particular current and
conclude accordingly the differential or cumulative compound generator.

Plot:
1) Plot the output power (P0) efficiency () curve.
2) Plot the terminal voltage (Vg) armature current (Ig) curve for
cumulative compound generator.
3) Plot the terminal voltage (Vg) armature current (Ig) curve for
differential compound generator.

Precautions:
1) Dont switch on the supply while making the connections.
2) Before switching on the supply, make sure starrier is at its maximum
position..
3) All the connections should be perfectly tight. No loose wire should be on
the table.
4) Applied voltage should not be more than the rated voltage.
5) Before switching on the supply, ensure there is some water in the drum
for cooling purpose.
