Base Plate Design AISC 360-10

(1) This document provides design parameters and allowable strength calculations for anchor bolts connecting a steel column to a base plate. (2) Formulas are provided to calculate the allowable compression (P), tension (T), and shear (V) strength based on the anchor bolt diameter, steel properties, and concrete compressive strength. (3) The allowable strength is calculated as the minimum of different limit states for each load type, divided by a resistance factor. Interaction equations are also provided to check combined tension and shear loading.

(3) Allowable Strength

General Interaction of Strength and Combined Tension & Shear
Pu Pn/ --- Compression
Tu Tn/ --- Tension
Vu Vn/ --- Shear
Tu / (Tn/) + Vu / (Vn/) 1.2 (Reference : Section D.7 of ACI 318-11)
Note : Friction between the base plate and the grout will resist shear forces. Therefore
if Pu* > Vu, shear check of anchor bolt can be ignored.
Where : = 0.55 (coefficient of friction for steel on grout)

Allowable Strength
Pn/ = Min. Pi i = 1, 2 [kN]
Tn/ = Min. Ti i = 1, 2 [kN]
Vn/ = V1 [kN]

A) COMPRESSION

A.1) Axial Load Capacity (see Section 3.1.1 of AISC Design Guide 1)
P1 = ( 0.85 * f'c * A1 * (A2/A1)1/2 ) / [kN]
= 2.50 (A2/A1) 2
A.2) Base Plate Bending (see Section 3.1.2 of AISC Design Guide 1)
P2 = tp2 * Fyp * B * N / (( 2 * L2 ) * ) [kN]
= 1.67
L= max m = ( N - 0.95 * dc ) / 2 [mm]
n = ( B - 0.80 * bfc ) / 2 [mm]
n' = * ( dc * bfc )1/2 / 4 [mm]
= 1.0

B) TENSION

db T1/
[mm] [kN]
M16 29.7
M20 42.8
M25 76.1
M32 118.8

B.2) Base Plate Bending (see Section 4.5 of AISC Design Guide 1)
(Refer to Figure 1.0)
T2 = nb * Fyp * beff * tp2 / (( 4 * g ) * ) [kN] (For Type - 1)
T2 = 2*nb * Fyp * beff * tp2 / (( 3 * g ) * ) [kN] (For Type - 2)
= 1.67

C) SHEAR

C.1) Anchor Bolt

V1 = 0.75 * Ab *FuB / [kN]

nb = 4
db V1/
[mm] [kN]
M16 17.8
M20 25.7
M25 45.6
M32 71.3
Note: Concrete Breakout and Concrete Pyrout Strength due to shear loading shall
be checked according to ACI 318M-11 Appendix D.
