CHAPTER 2
2.1 Overview
The Cabling Design System application allows the users to create cableways, cables and dress the
cableways with material (trays / ladders). The cables can be routed through the cableway network to provide
such information as length estimations and node schedules. The application is divided into three main areas,
Cableways, Cables and Cableway material. The cabling design process is as follows:
Cableways are created early in the 3D modelling process to reserve space in the model for the
cables and cable trays.
Cables are selected from the catalogue, optionally connected to equipment, before entering the
cableway to follow the cableways route until leaving to connect to another equipment element.
Alternatively, the cables and connecting equipment could have come from the Cable Diagrams
application and be built through the Schematic-3D-Integrator application.
The system currently uses Dijkstras algorithm for the routing of cables around the cableway / tray
Cable tray material is added to the cableways either automatically or manually. There are also
options to allow the user to initially dress the cableway with material.

CHAPTER 3
3 Cableways
Cableways are the first phase in the creation of the Cabling System. They are used to reserve a volume in
space through which cables can be routed, and the Cableway material will be added. There are a range of
element types used to define parameters such as the Head, Tail, route etc. which will be covered later in the
course.
Cableway Branches have a number of attributes which can be defined upon the creation or modification of
the cableway branch. These attributes are shown below along with some examples.
Bend Radius This is the bend radius that will be applied to the cableway when created and also
when the cableway is dressed with material.

AVEVA Marine (12.1)
Cable Design TM-2225
Open Direction This is the direction of open side of the cableway, once it is dressed with material.
The Open Direction must be set to correspond with the first section of Cableway i.e. from the Head, as
the software uses this as a reference to work out changes in direction
Cable Excess (%) This is to allow for sagging when the cable is supported on the cable Tray.
i.e. if cable ladder is used then the cable will sag between the runs.
Maximum Fill (%) This is the Maximum fill level allowed on the cableway. It is calculated
based on the cross sectional area. Once this value has been exceeded, the
user would have to reroute additional cables along another cableway or
modify the size of the existing cableway to accommodate the additional
cables.
Current Fill Level (%) This is the Current Maximum fill level allowed on the cableway branch.
Interference
Cable Route Rule The rules are used to control the cable route i.e. (IClass EQ CONTROL);
this means that only cable with the IClass attribute set to CONTROL would
be allowed to be routed along this cableway branch and non CONTROL
cables would be routed on alternative cableways.
Standard Iclass This attribute, if set on the cableway and then a cableway route rule is
added, this will allow only cables with the same IClass attribute to be routed
along the cableway. The Load button will load the IClasses from the
Properties database.
The IClass (Interference Class) attribute set by the Cable Route Rule is very important. This attribute, if
different on the cable and cableway, will stop the cable from being routed.

CHAPTER 4
4 Cable Design
Cables are normally created after the layout of the cabling system has been defined by the cableways. The
created cables are then routed along the cableways to connect to various equipment elements either
automatically or manually. The cable has a cable specification that includes the physical properties of the
cable. Some of these properties are listed below.
Outer Diameter
Where the magnitude represents the ratio of the voltage difference amplitude to the current
amplitude, while the argument gives the phase difference between voltage and current. In Cartesian
form,
Where the real part of impedance is the resistance and the imaginary part is the reactance.
Dimensionally, impedance is the same as resistance; the SI unit is the ohm

Depending upon the configuration of the project, the cables may be stored in different databases, which the
Cableway user does not have access to. If this is the case the user may have to logoff and log back into the
application as a different user. In this case the databases have been configured to allow a cableway user
and a cable user to access both applications.
From the main pull down menu select Create > Cable. The Create
Cable form is now displayed.
The Create Cable form is split into six sections as shown below.
Element Naming
Name - The Name field is populated automatically by clicking the
AutoNaming icon; a new name can be keyed in if required.

head and two for the tail, which are user dedfined.
Proximity Distance The proximity distance is the search
distance for an equipment element from the end of a cableway.
Routing Status - This is the status of the current cable, i.e. Un-
routed, Routed, Routing failed, etc.
Cable Length This is the total Cable Length. This is populated
when the cable is routed, this is calculated from the point where the cable enters the cableway or
cable tray and the point where the cable leaves the cableway / tray, plus the Cable Free Length, plus
any added Excess Lengths and percentages from defaults.
Cable Free Length - This is populated when the cable is routed. This is the total length from the start
equipment to the point the cable enters the cableway / tray plus the total length from the point the
cable leaves the cableway / tray to the end equipment.

The Cabling Defaults form which is accessible from Settings > Cabling Defaults provides the user with a
choice of two methods for determining how a cable route is chosen by the Auto Routing facility.
The example cableway used below is a U-shaped branch with two Takeoff Route Nodes (RN027 and
RN028) positioned on the long straight section.
Minimise Free Route finds the closest valid entry and exit points to the Start and End References, and
then finds the shortest route through the connected cableways. The example below is AutoRouted using
Minimise Free Route
Minimise Total Length searches all valid entry and exit points within the Proximity Distance from the Start
and End Reference points, and uses the shortest possible route. The example below is AutoRouted using
Minimise Total Length. As the Takeoff Route Nodes are within the Proximity Distance, they are used as the
entry and exit points to minimise the length of the cable.

class of POWER). Now on the CableWay Branch Modify Tasks form, the user can select the Standard Iclass
radio button and from the pull down select CONTROL. This sets the Cable Routing Rule to (ICLASS EQ
CONTROL)
Now if the user tries to Auto route HVS-005 once again, a power cable with the Iclass attribute set to
POWER, then the cable will no longer be possible to be routed along the cableway and either an alternative
path if available, will be taken to reach its end reference point, or and Error message will be displayed
informing the user Cable routing failed. There is no valid route
If there is more than one Iclass then the cable routing rule could be keyed in i.e. (ICLASS EQ

Once the cableway branches have been routed, they can be dressed with material. The material can be
applied to the cableway regardless if cables have been routed or not. The default specification selected
defines the cross section to be used for space reservation and therefore the cable tray material. In the
Design hierarchy the material is situated below the Cableway Branch element. This material element will
own the cableway material elements such as Straights, Bends, Risers, Tees, Crosses and Reducers.
There are two distinct parts to the Cable Tray side of the application. The first is the Preliminary Dressing.
These elements are always created first, whether using the manual or automatic dressing options.
In the Design Explorer these appear as CTSTRA (Straights), CTBEND (Bends), CTRISE (Risers), CTTEE
(Tees), CTCROS (Crosses) and CTREDU (Reducers) elements, beneath the administrative CTMTRL
(Cable Tray Material) element.
Once the Preliminary Dressing has been created, the material components can be applied. The automatic
dressing options use the information from the Preliminary Dressing elements to select the correct
component. If working manually, the components are selected individually

Creating new components uses the same basic form and steps as the
modification process. The CTMTRL element must already be present though
in order to create a new component.
The component creation function is accessed from Create > Material >
Elements option from the main pull down menu.
The form layout is identical to the Modify <Component Type> form, with just
the Creation radio button selected instead of Modification.
First a component type must be selected from the list at the top. The fields
beneath the Angle attributes and Dimensions drop-down panels will vary
depending on the type selected, to reflect the difference in the how theyre
defined, e.g. Risers can be Inside or Outside, whereas Bends are Left or
Right.
The second step is to define the position of the components. The position is
determined by the Along Route (Zdis) value in the Offsets section of the
form, and is relative to the selected Reference Point e.g. 2000 from
Reference Point 2.
Once a Reference Point has been set, the Along Route (Zdis) value can be
set using the Pick Position link label and graphically selecting the Cable
Tray component immediately before where the new one is to be placed.
The Dimension attributes can also be set if required, but when a specific
material component is selected, these attributes will be automatically
updated to the fit the chosen component.
Once all the information has been set, clicking the Create link label will
create the Preliminary Dressing item. By default the user remains in
Creation mode, and must select the Modification radio button to access
the component selection options.

7 Cableway Penetrations
On a typical AVEVA Marine project it is necessary for designers to create holes in panel elements, i.e. deck
plates, grating, Bulkheads, etc. Due to the implications on design integrity and cost, the hole creation
process needs to be controlled and managed.
AVEVA Marine controls and manages holes using the Hole Management application which facilitates:
Communication of hole data between disciplines, including Request and Approval processes.
Ensuring holes are only created by users with appropriate write access permissions.
Performing validation checks on managed holes and providing feedback to users on the hole
status.
Generation of reports for managed holes.
Generally in AVEVA Marine projects discipline Designers do not have write access to items created by other
disciplines, i.e. a Cable Designer does not have write access to Structural Hull elements and Structural Hull
Designers do not have write access to Cable elements.
With Hole Management, penetration holes are specified and requested by the penetrating discipline,
normally Cable, Piping, HVAC or Equipment designers, and approved by the penetrated discipline, normally
Structural Hull Designers. For cases where a penetration is required, for a steel section through a floor plate,
the hole would be specified, requested and approved by the outfitting structural discipline.
The definition of a penetration hole by the relevant discipline in the appropriate Design application creates a
virtual hole in the panel element, consisting of a FRMW and two FIXING elements. Each FIXING element
has a Specification Reference (Spref) attribute that points to the hole definition in the catalogue. An
Association (ASSOC) element that references all of the hole elements is also created.
Once the virtual hole has been created the penetrating discipline enters the Hole Management application
and requests the hole. The owner of the panel, normally the Structural discipline, then reviews and approves
(or rejects) the hole request using the mechanism provided by the Hole Management application.
The act of approving the request creates the actual hole as a PFIT owned by the PANE element. The Hole
Management application checks and validates the hole using the association restrictions and stores data on
the hole history and status. Only valid holes may be approved. For a structural penetration the Structural
Designer may be both the requester and approver, although specific company procedures, controlled by
Data Access Control (DAC), may be required if the Originator and Reviewer need to be different.

If a suitable STRU does not exist, the following error message will be
displayed.
If no ASSOGP element with the Purpose set to HOLE can be found, the Hole Management application will
create an ASSOGP in the first writeable ASSOWL element and set the Purpose attribute.
Once the penetration hole has been specified and the virtual hole created, the Hole Management
application provides a series of tasks for the Originator (Penetrating discipline) and Reviewer (Structural
discipline). These tasks are:
There are three main workflow scenarios for the request/approval cycle that are detailed in the following
sections.

In this workflow the Originator creates the virtual hole and then either requests it or deletes the entry.
If requested and not cancelled or deleted, the Reviewer checks the hole details and, if verified, approves the
hole, thereby creating the actual hole.
If the Reviewer rejects the hole then the Originator can either modify the virtual hole and re-request the
hole or cancel the request and delete the entry.
In this workflow the actual hole has been created. The Originator decides that the hole is now redundant
and sets its status to Redundant.
Before the Originator can delete the entry the Reviewer must agree that the hole is redundant.

In this workflow the actual hole has been created. The Reviewer, possibly due to changed conditions,
decides to reject the hole. The Originator has the option to:
Modify the hole and re-request it, whereby it will go through the normal review and approval
cycle.
Cancel the request, in which case the virtual hole details remain
Delete the entry, in which case the entire hole is deleted and the virtual hole and association
deleted. The actual hole is deleted and the panel restored to its original state.
The Hole Management application, as with other applications that use associations, is passive, i.e. the user
is not alerted if a hole association is broken or invalidated. The user must enter the Hole Management
application and actively verify if the association is still valid.
The use of the application will vary from company to company. In some it may be down to the individual
Designers to request and approve holes, whilst in others it may be the discipline Lead Designer or a
designated user who performs the tasks.

This allows the user to convert cable trays for the Cable Trays module into Cableway volumes (cableway
branches)
The Cable Tray Volume form allows the user to select existing cable tray created with the Cable Trays
module and from these create volumes with dimensions extracted from the tray members. Additionally the
user can also select the ZONE where they would like to create the newly created elements. The user may
also set some cableway branch attributes using the form.
The application checks for any changes in tray width and change in direction on a TEE or a CROSS
element, as this will require a new cableway branch to be created, and then for each Tray a new Cableway
(CWAY) and Cableway Branch (CWBRAN) elements are created under the CWAY.
The populated list is checked for any change in direction (BEND / ELBOW) in the tray and a new POINTR is
added to the RPATH of the cableway branch element.
For each CROSS or TEE on the cable Tray a new RATTA is created under the CONSEQ element of the
cableway branch. If a CROSS or TEE has a leave point at an angle i.e. 3, then a new branch will be
automatically created.
The VWidth of the new cableway branch is extracted from the ABORE attribute of the first element of the
segregated list.
Prior to running the Cable Trays Volumes convertor, drag the cabletray.txt macro into the Command
Window. This will create two cable Tray elements in the ZONE 403-CABLE-001
The Cable Trays Volumes form can be activated by selecting Utilities > CableTrays Volumes
When the Cableway Tray Volumes form is loaded, it will list all the cable trays form the currently selected
ZONE, it also displays the Head and Tail connections for each branch under the Cable Tray List tab on the
form. The user may choose to switch between WORLD, SITE or ZONE using the design explorer to change
the selection level.

AS can be seen from the converted cable trays above, the new cableway elements have been created.
Each branch contains two RNODES which present the HEAD and TAIL of each branch, the branch also
contains RATTAs which are placed at the position of any TEE or CROSS. The bend radius for each
POINTR is inherited from the corresponding element on the cable tray. If no bend radius attribute is
available then it is then calculated from the arrive position and the leave position of each BEND or ELBO.
(The user may also set this radius attribute while creating the volumes by choosing the Manual option from
the form and then specifying the radius value.
For any given cableway, if multiple branches are created, the utility automatically connects all the
branches where possible. The feature also connects a new volume to all the other volumes whose
associated cable trays are connected to the current cable tray i.e. connected at a TEE, CROSS, HEAD
or TAIL
