Worksheet 7 Fully Reversed Loading in Fatigue

A rotating steel shaft made of 4340 quenched and tempered steel is subjected to fully reversed bending loads. The shaft has a surface condition of a = 1.34 ksi and b = -0.085 and will operate at room temperature. The design requires a reliability of 99.99%. Given material properties and dimensions, the fatigue life is to be determined for point A, which has a stress concentration factor due to a fillet radius of r = 0.08 in.

Worksheet 7: Fully Reversed Loading in Fatigue

A 4340 quench and tempered rotating steel shaft is loaded in fully reversed bending
as shown below. The bar has been machined with surface conditions a = 1.34 ksi and
b = -0.085, and will be operating at room temperature. The program requires a
reliability of 99.99 percent. Material properties from MIL HDBK 5J are shown on the
next two pages. The fillet radii at all points is r = 0.08 in. The fatigue strength fraction
f = 0.76, and the notch sensitivity is q = 0.96. Recall that the ultimate strength (Sut) is
referred to as Ftu in MIL HDBK 5J.
