Automation Basics - Grounding - Engineering, Not Black Magic - IsA

The document discusses engineering principles for effective grounding and shielding to prevent undesired signals from interfering with automation systems. It describes four main paths that noise can take into a system, and discusses techniques to limit inductive, capacitive, radiated, and direct coupling of interference. These include using shields, understanding noise sources, slowing rise times to reduce effects of high dV/dt signals, using magnetic shields to block transmission of RF signals, and ensuring proper grounding references. Pulse-width modulation signals from devices like servo amplifiers and power supplies are identified as common noise sources.
