LUBRICATION RECOMMENDATION
NOTE:1 THIS COMPRESSOR MANUFACTURER CALLS FOR THE USE OF ENGINE OIL DURING WARRANTY PERIOD, PROBABLY FOR
CUSTOMER CONVENIENCE. IT IS LE'S POLICY DURING THE WARRANTY PERIODS TO RECOMMEND THE LUBRICANT,
BE IT ENGINE OR COMPRESSOR OIL, WHICH WILL NOT VOID THE MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY. THEREFORE, WHEN
A COMPRESSOR IS UNDER WARRANTY AND THE MANUFACTURER RECOMMENDS ENGINE OIL, ONLY RECOMMEND THE
PROPER VISCOSITY TYPE LE ENGINE OIL.
NOTE:2 THIS COMPRESSOR MANUFACTURER INDICATED THAT ANY LUBRICANT WHICH MEETS THEIR SPECIFICATION CAN BE
USED DURING THE WARRANTY PERIOD, BE IT COMPRESSOR OIL, OR ENGINE OIL. IN THIS CASE, THE LE RECOMMENDATION
WOULD BE FIRST A COMPRESSOR OIL AND SECOND AN ENGINE OIL OF THE PROPER VISCOSITY GRADE. IN SEVERE
OPERATING ENVIRONMENTS WHERE THE POTENTIAL FOR ACID HYDROLYSIS EXISTS, IT MAY BE ADVISABLE TO RECOMMEND
AN ENGINE OIL OF THE PROPER VISCOSITY GRADE. MULTILEC IS ALSO AN OPTION WHEN ACID HYDROLYSIS IS POSSIBLE.
NOTE:3 SOME COMPRESSOR MANUFACTURERS CALL FOR ATF (TYPICALLY DEXRON AT VERY LOW AMBIENT TEMPERATURES
ONLY, WHILE OTHERS (FOR CERTAIN MODELS) SUGGEST ITS USE AT ALL TEMPERATURES. WHILE ATF CAN BE SUGGESTED

OILS, OR MULTILEC INDUSTRIAL OILS (IN THE PROPER VISCOSITY GRADE) RELATIVE TO THE TEMPERATURE AND/OR OPERATING

COMPRESSORS AND COMPRESSOR LUBRICATION
COMPRESSORS ARE MACHINES FOR SQUEEZING AIR (OR GAS) INTO A SMALLER VOLUME. THERE ARE MANY, BUT ONLY TWO MAIN
TYPES ARE USED FOR COMPRESSING AIR. THESE ARE RECIPROCATING AND ROTARY. THEY MAY BE WATER OR AIR COOLED. THEY
MAY RANGE IN SIZE FROM AN AIR DISCHARGE OF A FEW CUBIC FEET PER MINUTE TO THOUSANDS OF CUBIC FEET PER MINUTE.
THEY RANGE IN PRESSURE OF THE COMPRESSED AIR FROM A FEW POUNDS PER SQUARE INCH TO MANY HUNDREDS OF POUNDS
PER SQUARE INCH.
IN SMALL RECIPROCATING UNITS, THE CYLINDERS AND CRANKCASE MAY BE LUBRICATED BY EITHER A COMMON SPLASH OR A
COMMON PRESSURE SYSTEM. IN LARGER RECIPROCATING UNITS, A SEPARATE SYSTEM IS USUALLY PROVIDED TO LUBRICATE THE
CYLINDERS. IT IS NECESSARY TO WATCH CAREFULLY THE AMOUNT OF OIL USED TO LUBRICATE THE CYLINDER WALLS AND
PISTON RINGS. TOO MUCH OIL ON THE UPPER CYLINDER WALLS CAN RESULT IN OIL-IN-AIR DOWNSTREAM AND/OR GUMMY
DEPOSITS. DUE TO THE HEAT OF COMPRESSION, THESE DEPOSITS MAY HARDEN ON THE DISCHARGE AIR VALVES WHICH MAY
RESULT IN IMPROPER VALVE FUNCTIONING. THE OIL IS NOT WASHED OUT QUICKLY AS IT IS IN A STEAM ENGINE, NOR IS IT AS
IN AN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE. THE OIL FILM IS MAINTAINED ON A COMPARATIVELY COOL PISTON SURFACE. IT IS THE
AREA ABOVE THE PISTON, DURING THE COMPRESSION CYCLE, WHICH EXPERIENCES THE HEAT.
A HIGH RATE OF OIL FEED IS WASTEFUL AND MAY CAUSE HARM TO THE COMPRESSOR, JUST ENOUGH OIL TO MAINTAIN A GOOD
FILM ON THE CYLINDER WALLS SHOULD BE SUPPLIED. IF MORE THAN THIS IS SUPPLIED, THE EXCESS LODGES IN ALL CLEARANCES
AND ON THE VALVES, AND THEN GOES INTO THE INTERCOOLERS AND THE RECEIVER. IF DUST ENTERS THE COMPRESSOR, IT CAN
COMBINE WITH THE OIL AND CREATE GUMMY DEPOSITS. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO REALIZE THAT A RELATIVELY SMALL AMOUNT
OF OIL PER MINUTE WILL LUBRICATE THE LARGEST COMPRESSOR. IF THE OIL SUPPLY IS TOO GREAT, COOLING SURFACES WILL
COLLECT A COATING OF DUST AND OIL. THIS COATING REDUCES THE HEAT TRANSFER AND CONSEQUENTLY INCREASES THE
AIR DISCHARGE TEMPERATURE. THIS REDUCES THE CAPACITY OF THE COMPRESSOR AND INCREASES THE NECESSITY FOR
CLEANING. EXTREME CASES OF NEGLECT AND OVER LUBRICATION HAVE CAUSED FIRES AND EVEN EXPLOSIONS IN COMPRESSOR
SYSTEMS. THE FOLLOWING TABLE INDICATES APPROXIMATE AMOUNTS OF OIL REQUIRED. REMEMBER THAT THIS TABLE IS TO
BE USED ONLY AS A "GUIDE" TO GIVE AN APPROXIMATION OF WHAT OIL FEED RATE SHOULD BE USED TO LUBRICATE THE
UPPER CYLINDER. EACH COMPRESSOR SHOULD BE TREATED AS A SEPARATE AND DISTINCT UNIT SINCE A COMPRESSOR'S
COMPLEXITY GIVES EACH UNIT ITS OWN, DISTINCT OPERATING CHARACTERISTICS. EVEN THE SAME MAKE AND MODEL AIR
COMPRESSORS SITTING SIDE-BY-SIDE IN THE SAME OPERATING ENVIRONMENT MAY REQUIRE THE USE OF TWO DIFFERENT OIL
FEED RATES. THE ONLY TRUE TEST OF PROPER UPPER CYLINDER LUBRICATION IS AN ACTUAL INSPECTION. THE ENTIRE METAL
SURFACE, WHEN INSPECTED, SHOULD APPEAR "WET". NO DRY SPOTS SHOULD BE EVIDENCED SINCE THIS WOULD REPRESENT
OF LUBRICATION. OF COURSE, ANY OIL PUDDLES OR CARBONACEOUS DEPOSITS WOULD INDICATE TOO HIGH AN OIL FEED RATE.

LASTLY, IT SHOULD BE UNDERSTOOD THAT YOU SHOULD NEVER ATTEMPT TO CUT THE OIL FEED RATES ALL AT ONCE. SUCCESSIVE,
SMALL REDUCTIONS IN THE OIL FEED RATE IS THE ONLY WAY THE QUANTITY OF OIL TO THE UPPER CYLINDER AREA CAN BE SAFELY
REDUCED WITHOUT DAMAGE TO THE AIR COMPRESSOR. REMEMBER, VISUAL UPPER CYLINDER INSPECTIONS MUST BE PERFORMED
IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE OIL FEED RATE STEP-BY -STEP REDUCTION.
NOTE: THE FIGURES GIVEN ARE FOR GRAVITY AND VACUUM TYPE SIGHT FEED LUBRICATORS. FOR GLYCERINE SIGHT
FEED LUBRICATORS, DIVIDE THE FIGURES GIVEN BY THREE. FEEDS TO CYLINDER BORES SHOULD NEVER BE LESS THAN
ONE DROP, PER FEED PER MINUTE UNDER ANY CONDITIONS.
THE QUANTITIES GIVEN ARE BASED ON AN AVERAGE OF 8,000 DROPS PER PINT (16,900 DROPS PER LITER) OF OIL AT 75F (24C)

NOTE: THIS OIL FEED RATE TABLE IS REPRINTED FROM THE "COMPRESSED AIR AND GAS HANDBOOK" AND THAT IS USED FOR
TYPICAL FEED RATE DATA. GENERALLY, WHEN USING MONOLEC PETROLEUM OR SYNTHETIC AIR COMPRESSOR OILS,
THE ABOVE RATES CAN BE REDUCED BY AS MUCH AS 25% TO 50%. HOWEVER NEVER REDUCE THE OIL FEED RATE THE
ENTIRE 25% TO 50% ALL AT ONCE. IT IS LE'S RECOMMENDATION THAT THE OIL FEED RATE BE DECREASED IN SMALL,
MEASURED INCREMENTS WITH A PERIODIC VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE UPPER CYLINDER WALL TO INSURE THAT
UNDER LUBRICATION DOES NOT OCCUR. THIS WAY YOU CAN SAFELY REDUCE THE OIL FEED RATE WITHOUT PUTTING
THE COMPRESSOR'S OPERATION IN ANY JEOPARDY.
THE USE OF MONOLEC PETROLEUM OR SYNTHETIC AIR COMPRESSOR OIL, AT PROPER DRIP RATES (EVEN THOUGH
A VERY SMALL VOLUME OF OIL) WILL GIVE MAXIMUM PROTECTION BECAUSE OF THE EXCELLENT BASE STOCK USED
AND THE WEAR-REDUCING "MONOLEC" FILM.
