Assignment in Elective

1. Reflect on your own life and cite examples of acquisition.

Although I have gained many acquisitions in life. I want to share my recent acquisition, and
that is my first experience in Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Before our duty in the ICU my
objective is to deliver quality nursing care to patient who are critically ill. I prepared myself
physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. After my first duty at the ICU, I feel
blessed because of the new skills, and added knowledge that I learned. I learned that
empathy is very important in giving care to patients. Theres so many first time, and I
acknowledge our clinical instructor that day for sharing his knowledge to us in giving
nursing care. That day I feel like Im already a nurse although Im just a student nurse. The
opportunity, the learning, the skills, and much more. I will cherish that till I become a nurse
someday.

2. What were some of your struggles in life? How will these impacts on your own aging process.
To be uniformed I want to share my struggles in my first time in ICU and how it impacts my
life. I remembered, the first thing that pop on my mind when I saw my patient is, Can I
handle this? I have mixed emotions Im excited at the same time Im nervous. Inserting
IFC in my male client is very challenging on my part because thats my first time in that.
When I inserted the top of the catheter my verbalized ARAY! so I was shocked and my
hands are already shaking because I hurt the patient and my clinical instructor told me its
normal continue what youre doing. Also getting Capillary Blood Glucose (CBG) I dont
know what and how will I do it. So my clinical instructor again assisted me in collecting a
blood by CBG. Lucky to me my patient can talk and conscious. That time I feel good. It
may affect me but for the good. Added knowledge in my part and I know now how it feels
like doing that things. I feel I leveled up! From just a student nurse whos innocent in that
situation, now doing it in actual situation is a plus. After that I think of myself the student
nurse who entered that door at the ICU will leave that door with so much learning and a
different one. I want to add also the BP taking of patient there, every 1 hour.

3. What are you likely to leave as a legacy?

Finishing my first day Intensive Care Unit (ICU) duty was a great journey. Inserting a IFC,
getting CBG, and getting the right BP and being praised by your clinical instructor was
beyond my expectations and I felt Im self-actualized. Because feeling of being self-
actualized is not counted by how high you have climbed but by how many people you
brought with you. I feel relieved after all of the struggles that Ive encountered. And today
my 2nd duty Im hoping for the best that I will render a quality nursing care to the patient
who needs our help.
