2.0. The Latest Open Source Operating System (OS)

2.1. An operating system (OS) is software that manages computer hardware and software resources
and provides common services for computer programs. The operating system is an essential
component of the system software in a computer system. Application programs usually require an
operating system to function

2.2. Example Open Source OS (Two Example)

PC-BSD or PCBSD, is a trademarked Unix-like, desktop-oriented operating system built upon the
most recent releases of FreeBSD. It aims to be easy to install by using a graphical installation
program, and easy and ready-to-use immediately by providing KDE SC, LXDE, Xfce, and MATE as the
graphical user interface. It provides official binary nVidia and Intel drivers for hardware acceleration
and an optional 3D desktop interface through Kwin, and Wine is ready-to-use in running Microsoft
Windows software. PC-BSD is able to run Linux software,[3] in addition to FreeBSD ports, and it has
its own package management system that allows users to graphically install pre-built software
packages from a single downloaded executable file, which is unique for BSD operating systems.

PC-BSD uses a host of popular open source window managers and uses a custom-tailored
application installer that puts popular applications in easy reach of users.
PC-BSD is a open source Unix-like desktop operating system created upon the most recent
release version of FreeBSD. PC-BSD purpose is to make the experience of FreeBSD easy and
obtainable for the regular computer user by providing KDE, XFCE, LXDE and Mate as the
graphical user interface. By default PC-BSD comes with KDE Plasma as its default desktop
environment, but you can have the option to select your choice of desktop environment
during installation.

Net BSD

NetBSD is an open-source, Unix-like operating system that descends from Berkeley Software
Distribution (BSD), a Research Unix derivative developed at the University of California, Berkeley. It
was the second open-source BSD descendant formally released after it forked from the 386BSD
branch of the BSD source-code repository. It continues to be actively developed and is available for
many platforms, including large-scale server systems, desktop systems, and handheld devices and is
often used in embedded systems.

The basic features of NetBSD are:

Code quality and correctness

Portability to a wide range of hardware

Secure defaults

Adherence to industry standards

Research and innovation

These characteristics bring also indirect advantages. For example, if you work on just one platform
you could think that you're not interested in portability. But portability is tied to code quality;
without a well written and well organized code base it would be impossible to support a large
number of platforms. And code quality is the base of any good and solid software system, though
surprisingly few people seem to understand it.

One of the key characteristics of NetBSD is that its developers are not satisfied with partial
implementations. Some systems seem to have the philosophy of If it works, it's right. In that light
NetBSD's philosophy could be described as It doesn't work unless it's right. Think about how many
overgrown programs are collapsing under their own weight and features and you'll understand
why NetBSD tries to avoid this situation at all costs

3.0 The Latest Open Source Application Software

3.1 Meaning

Application software (an application) is a set of computer programs designed to permit the user to
perform a group of coordinated functions, tasks, or activities. Application software cannot run on
itself but is dependent on system software to execute. Examples of an application include a word
processor, a spreadsheet design and management system, an aeronautical flight simulator, a console
game, a drawing, painting, and illustrating system, or a library management system.

3.2 Two Examples.

VUE

Stable release = 3.2.2 / May 23, 2013

The Visual Understanding Environment (VUE) is an Open Source project based at Tufts University.
The VUE project is focused on creating flexible tools for managing and integrating digital resources in
support of teaching, learning and research. VUE provides a flexible visual environment for
structuring, presenting, and sharing digital information.

5.0 Pervasive Computing

5.1 Meaning:

Pervasive computing (also called ubiquitous computing) is the growing trend towards embedding
microprocessors in everyday objects so they can communicate information. The words pervasive
and ubiquitous mean "existing everywhere." Pervasive computing devices are completely connected
and constantly available.

5.2 Examples (2 examples)

A) PasswordBox Partnership Lets TheNymi ECG Wristband Log You In Anywhere On Mobile

PasswordBox is a login locker, one of those apps that stores passwords securely and lets you access
them anywhere for easy retrieval. Its the perfect partner for Nymi, which promises to offer secure,
unique authentication and identification of its users based on their ECG or heart rate. With
PasswordBox, Nymi can automatically log you into all your stored services, based on proximity and
gesture detection, making the need to remember all those things and enter them manually
irrelevant.

It works with PasswordBoxs existing 1-Tap login feature, which normally requires just a single tap
to enter your login info on mobile devices. Even that tap is removed with the Nymi integration. Its
the perfect use case for Nymi, too, which hopes to demonstrate that it can deliver authentication
quickly and conveniently across a range of potential applications. Itll need to prove that point
clearly to demonstrate its value to prospective buyers when it launches later this year.

B) ASUS Eee Pad 101TC

ASUS Eee Pad 101TC

The Eee Pad 101TC is in some respects a whole different kettle of fish to its bigger brother. It's not
just the 10 inches of glass that follows in the iPad's footsteps, but also the metal sleeve around the
edge now. Either way, this has become an aesthetically acceptable style and the textured backside
also looks good and adds grip, however in the early sample on show the quality of manufacture still
needs some tweaking around the edges.
