BCD To Seven Segment Decoder

The document discusses a BCD to seven segment decoder which converts binary coded decimal numbers to signals that drive a 7-segment display to show numbers, letters, or alphanumeric characters. It aims to provide a convenient way to display digital information. The decoder converts 4-bit BCD codes to activate the appropriate LED segments in a 7-segment display to show decimal numbers. It is limited to converting binary values to decimal for display on a 7-segment LED or LCD display.

BCD to Seven Segment Decoder

INTRODUCTION

I. PROJECT CONTEXT

A Digital Decoder IC, is a device which converts one digital format into another and one

of the most commonly used devices for doing this is called the Binary Coded Decimal (BCD) to

7-Segment Display Decoder. 7-segment LED (Light Emitting Diode) or LCD (Liquid Crystal

Display) type displays, provide a very convenient way of displaying information or digital data

in the form of numbers, letters, or even alpha-numerical characters. A decoder is a combinational

circuit which is used to convert a binary or BCD (Binary Coded Decimal) number to the

corresponding decimal number. It can be a simple binary to decimal decoder or a BCD to 7

segment decoder.

II. PURPOSE AND DESCRIPTION

The purpose is to display data in the form of numbers, letters, or even alpha-numerical

characters. BCD (Binary Coded Decimal) is an encoding scheme which represents each of the

decimal numbers by its equivalent 4-bit binary pattern. Seven segment displays comprise of

seven individual segments formed by either Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). For the display to

work, these segments are to be driven by the certain logic level at their input. Depending on this,

seven segment displays are found to be of two types viz., common cathode type and common

anode type.

III. OBJECTIVES

1. To provide a very convenient way of displaying information or digital data in the form

of numbers, letters, or even alpha-numerical characters.

IV. SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The project can only convert and display values from binary to decimal only using a 7-

segment display decoder.
