Learning: Learning Is A Need

Learning is a process that evolves over time through exposure to different theories and experiences. The course helped solidify the learner's vague prior ideas and assumptions about learning. Learning is essential for survival as it allows people to adapt, integrate knowledge, and continue learning throughout life. It is a product of memory, as people learn new things but describe them using memories. Learning results in changes in behavior, such as changing unhealthy habits based on new medical information. Learners also reflect the behaviors and qualities of teachers and learning models. Effective learning involves guidance from teachers or more knowledgeable others within a learner's zone of proximal development.

LEARNING

It is a worthwhile journey after all! After being exposed to different theories of learning,
their implications and applications, I can say, I am slowly progressing or evolving into
becoming a better learner.

Many of the things I have learned were not so new to me. I have already encountered
them before, but cannot name them. The course (EDS 103-Theories of Learning) has
concretized my vague ideas back then.

I wish to share my assumptions on learning.

Learning is a need. Similar to food, shelter and clothing, learning should be a

basic need to survive. Learners should be able to adapt to new environments, integrate
knowledge from different sources, and continue learning throughout ones lifetime.

Learning is a product of memory. People learn new thing by studying it, but
they describe it by using their memory to retrieve information about the things that they
have learned. Memory is essential to learning because it allows people to store and
retrieve information. Learning depends on memory because the knowledge stored in
the memory is then articulated into learning.

Learning is a change in behavior. Lets make this simple. Junk food is my

favorite snack. I eat them all the time. That is, up to such time that I experienced
difficulty in urinating. I went to the doctor and was told that I have a urinary tract
infection. I underwent medication have now renounced my junk food.

Learning is a reflection of a teacher. When learners are exposed to

appropriate learning models, they tend to imitate the behavior and exhibit similar
qualities of that model.

Learning is a guided performance. Remember ZPD and MKO? There should be

an engagement between teacher and learner that aims for self-directed learning for
the student.

Learning is an active making meaning process. Learning includes the

ability to be self-aware, to analyze experiences, to evaluate their meaning and to plan
further action based on analysis and reflection.
