The document presents a problem solving model and its application to a physics problem. The problem involves calculating the total distance traveled by a rubber ball dropped from a rooftop 18m high that rebounds to half the height of each drop. It rebounds twice before hitting the ground a third time. The solution breaks down each drop and rebound, adding the distances to get a total of 45m traveled.

Question
A rubber ball rebounds to half the height it drops. If the ball is dropped from a
rooftop 18m above the ground, what is the total distance traveled by the time it
hits the ground the third time?
Information given
A ball dropped from a rooftop 18m above the ground and the rubber ball rebounds
to half the height it drops.

Half of 18m is 9m

18m
Asking
What is the total distance traveled by the time it hits the ground the third time?
Steps to solve
So if the ball dropped from a rooftop 18m above the ground and rebounds to half
the height which half of 18m is 9m. It will drop the same 9 meters to hit the
ground a second time .

18m/2=9m
Finding the second drop...
So if the second time the ball drops the same 9 meters then it will rebound again
4.5 meters, half of the 9 meters.

9/2= 4.5

1st

4.5

2nd
Finding the third drop
After it has rebound up 4.5m then it has to drop to the ground 4.5m again to hit the
ground for the third time.

1st
drop

2nd
18 drop
4.5 3rd
9 drop
9
4.5
Solution
If the 1st drop was 18m , the second drop was 9m rebound and 9m drop , and then
the third rebound was 4.5m and 4.5m to hit the ground for the third time. So we
are going to add all the numbers to find the total distance traveled by the time it hit
the ground the third time.

1st+2nd+3rd=total distance

18m+9m+9m+4.5m+4.5m=45m

The total distance traveled by the time it hit the

ground the third time is 45m.
