The Drop

The document is a word problem about calculating the total distance traveled by a rubber ball dropped from a rooftop. It is dropped from 18 meters and rebounds to half the height with each bounce. The summary breaks down the information given, calculates the height of each bounce (18 m, 9 m, 4.5 m), and uses addition to determine the total distance traveled is 31.5 meters by the third bounce.

TEKS Objective

111.4 Grade 2

(b) Knowledge and skills.

(1) Mathematical process standards. The student uses mathematical processes to acquire and demonstrate mathematical
understanding. The student is expected to:
(A) apply mathematics to problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace;
(B) use a problem-solving model that incorporates analyzing given information, formulating a plan or strategy, determining a
solution, justifying the solution, and evaluating the problem-solving process and the reasonableness of the solution;
(C) select tools, including real objects, manipulatives, paper and pencil, and technology as appropriate, and techniques,
including mental math, estimation, and number sense as appropriate, to solve problems;
(D) communicate mathematical ideas, reasoning, and their implications using multiple representations, including symbols,
diagrams, graphs, and language as appropriate;
(E) create and use representations to organize, record, and communicate mathematical ideas;
(F) analyze mathematical relationships to connect and communicate mathematical ideas; and
(G) display, explain, and justify mathematical ideas and arguments using precise mathematical language in written or oral

PROBLEM

"A rubber ball rebounds to half the height it drops. If the ball is
dropped from a rooftop 18 m above the ground, what is the
total distance traveled by the time it hits the ground the third
time?

THE DROP
Step one our Given information

"A rubber ball rebounds to half the height it drops. If the

ball is dropped from a rooftop 18 m above the
ground, what is the total distance traveled by the time it hits the
ground the third time?

Our key information is the ball is dropped from 18m

The top shoe or person dropping the ball is 18m

The second shoe, where the video stops is half the rebound

Find that Distance

18/2=9

There are 18 * we colored half of them how many * in each

equal part

Next Bounce
This bounce shows the ball
going from second shoe to last
shoe, again we need to know
that distance
9/2=? #########

Our picture now shows 9 #,

and only 4.5 of them are
colored blue, since 9 is an odd
number

The Question
"A rubber ball rebounds to half the height
it drops. If the ball is dropped from a
rooftop 18 m above the ground, what is
the total distance traveled by the time it
hits the ground the third time?

Now we want to look at what we are

solving for?

what is the total distance

traveled by the time it
hits the ground the third
time?
Now that we broke down our problem let us
answer the Question.

Monday, July 3, 17
Data
The drop started at 18m
Half of 18
9m
Half of 9m
4.5m
We want to know total distance!

How to find the Total
If we are just looking at the data collected how do we
find total distance, before the third bounce?

This video represents the last bounce we measured and

the following bounces.

What type of equation do we need for our problem? +, -,

*, /

We need addition. We are going to add 18, the ball travels

down, hits ground, goes up 8, then drops and goes up 4.5
before touching the ground.

18+8+4.5+
