The document describes how to solve a multi-step word problem about a rubber ball dropped from a rooftop. It is dropped from 18 meters above the ground. Each time it rebounds, it bounces back to half the height it was dropped from. The question asks for the total distance traveled by the time it hits the ground for the third time. The document walks through each bounce, showing that the ball travels a total distance of 45 meters.

Problem Solving

"A rubber ball rebounds to half the height it drops. If the ball is dropped from a rooftop 18
m above the ground, what is the total distance traveled by the time it hits the ground the
third time?
a. 31.5 m
b. 40.5 m
c. 45 m
d. 63 m
First step

First step is already given to you in the question which is :

the ball is dropped from a rooftop 18 m above the ground.
Ball dropped: 18m
Count all balls

18
Second step
Find the distance traveled in the second time
18 / 2 = 9
You have a total of 18 and you have to divide them in two groups you should end up with 9 in each
group:

First group Second group 9 balls in each group

It goes down 9m as well. So we add 9 to the answer.
9 +9 =18
Count ball=18
Third step

Find the distance traveled in the third time

9 / 2 = 4.5 You have a total of 9 balls trying to divide them into two groups you should end
up with 4.5 in each group.

First group : second group: 4.5 in each group

It goes down 4.5m. Ad another 4.5 to the answer.
4.5 + 4.5 = 9 Count balls = 9
Fourth step

For the total distance traveled gather all your balls from the last steps which was :
18 + 9 + 9 + 4.5 + 4.5
Fifth Step

Add them all up 18 + 9 + 9 + 4.5 + 4.5 = 45

Total amount is 45 m
Explanation

Add all up the circles and count how many

you have in total from the previous steps!
