Demolition Specifications
SECTION 02 41 00
DEMOLITION
The provisions of BART Facilities Standards, Standard Specifications, Release R2.1, dated October
2009, Section 02 41 00, Demolition, shall apply to the Work, except as modified herein.
PART 1 GENERAL
I. Section 01 74 14 Cleaning
Delete Article 1.03A and 1.03B and substitute therefor the following:
Separate measurement or payment will not be made for Work required under this Technical
Specifications Section. All costs in connection with the Work specified in this Technical
Specifications Section will be considered to be included with the related item of Work in the Price
Schedule or incidental to the Work.
The Contract Price paid for Demolition and Clearing shall include all demolition and clearing
necessary to complete the Work, including but not limited to the work required by this Technical
Specification. Demolition of Buildings shall be included in the Contract Price paid for Demolition
and Clearing and shall include removal and disposal of hazardous materials and remediation of soils
as identified in the Phase 2 Environmental Site Assessment reports, or as specified herein.
1.04 REFERENCES

Add the following to the end of the last sentence in Article 1.05A.1 as follows:

1.06 DESCRIPTION
Delete Articles 1.06A.1, 1.06A.2, and 1.06B and substitute therefor the following:
A. The Contractor shall furnish all labor, materials, equipment, transportation, and services as
necessary to complete all demolition work included in the Technical Specifications. This
work shall include but not be limited to the demolition and removal of above grade
structures, buildings, concrete slab on grade, culverts, curbs and walkways, underground
concrete vaults with associated reinforcing elements, asphalt concrete; underground
drainage lines, abandoned utilities, and underground storage tanks.
B. Scope of Demolition: Contractor shall demolish and remove all existing and temporary
facilities as necessary to complete the Work and construct all permanent or temporary
facilities including but not limited to structures identified in the Attachment - A Exhibits
and as necessary for the Project. In addition, Contractor shall demolish and remove all
buildings and remove all materials from campus area B1, B2, M1A, M1B and M2 as
indicated at the Berryessa and Milpitas Stations in Technical Specification Section 01 31 27
and Contract Appendix 5.
C. Any hazardous material and contaminants such as waste oil, fuel, sludge, or other residues
present in the underground vaults, tanks or sumps shall be removed and disposed of by the
Contractor at the appropriate hazardous materials disposal facilities or recycler in
accordance with Sections 01 74 25 Contaminant Management. Contractor shall provide all
manifest, permits and the services of a licensed hazardous waste hauler.
D. Demolition requirements:
1. Utility structures comprising existing manholes, catch basins, and other sewerage
structures, designated on the Construction Drawings to be removed shall be removed
completely.

4. Contractor shall be responsible for clearing and preparing the route for utility
relocations including but not limited to demolition of buildings and retaining wall
structures, sound walls, removal of fences, trees and other obstructions to the Work.
5. Contractor is hereby notified that certain building site demolition, clearing and
remediation is required to allow the Relocation of Chevron and MCI facilities.
Contractor shall coordinate this work in accordance with Technical Specification 01
31 31, Utility Coordination. Contractor shall complete demolition and clearing
operations on those portions of parcels required to support the Relocation of Chevron
and MCI.
E. Abandonment: Sanitary sewers, storm sewers, sewer laterals or other culverts, designated
on the Construction Drawings to be abandoned, but not required to be removed, shall be:

structures, and
F. Removal of at-grade structures, such as existing pavements, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and
designated utility structures within the jurisdiction of the Cities of Milpitas and Fremont
shall be done in accordance with these Technical Specifications, at the locations indicated
on the Construction Drawings.
G. Removal of at-grade structures, such as existing pavements, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and
designated utility structures within the jurisdiction of the City of San Jose shall be done in
accordance with Section 15, Existing Facilities, of the City of San Jose Standard
Specifications, and Section 16, Clearing and Grubbing, of the City of San Jose Standard
Specifications, at the locations indicated on the Construction Drawings.
H. Buildings and structure foundations, footings, and foundation systems shall be completely
removed.
I. The word remove as used in these Technical Specifications shall mean remove from the
site and dispose of. Unless otherwise noted on the Construction Drawings, all items shall
be removed completely including above grade and underground construction.
Contract Documents. Contractor shall demolish, remove, and or remediate those buildings
and building sites in accordance with these Technical Specifications. For those buildings to
be demolished for which Phase 2 Environmental Assessments are not available, Contractor
shall assume the conditions as identified in the Hazardous Remediation Matrix in Article
1.09 D.6 will be found, and shall demolish, remove, and remediate the buildings and
building site accordingly. The exhibits in Attachment A are provided as an aid in clarifying
the scope of building demolition. Contractor is responsible for complete demolition and
remediation of the entire property sites in accordance with these Contract documents.
1.07 PERMITS
A. The Contractor shall obtain all demolition and disposal permits and licenses and give all
notices required for performance and completion of the demolition and removal work,
hauling, and disposal of debris. This includes securing permit from SCVWD and ACWD
for removal/destruction of well, and demolition permit from the City of Fremont, City of
Milpitas, and City of San Jose.
1.08 SUBMITTALS
In Article 1.08B, delete the word Engineer and substitute therefor with the word Engineer of
Record.
In Article 1.08E, delete the word District and substitute therefor with the word VTA.
G. Work Plan: Contractor shall submit a work plan that incorporates the Work provided in
Contract Documents for remediation of hazardous and /or contaminated conditions.
H. Environmental Permits: VTA will obtain permits as required from the Local Department of
Environmental Health. All other permits shall be secured by the Contractor in accordance
with Technical Specification Section 01 74 25 Contaminant Management and 01 35 70
Environmental Requirements.
1. Install chain link fencing around the area of demolition work at locations where the
portion of the structure to be demolished is located less than 5 ft. horizontally from
public access; or is located where falling debris may cause injury to workers or the
public, or cause damage to private property. Chain link fencing is specified in
Technical Specifications Section 32 31 13, Chain Link Fencing and Gates. Comply
with applicable requirements of Technical Specifications Section 01 52 00,
Construction Facilities
3. The Contractor shall make all provisions necessary to protect all adjacent structures,
walks, pavement, and utilities during demolition. Any damages shall be repaired and
restored to the original condition prior to start of construction in accordance with
Section 01 75 00 Preservation and Restoration.
In Article 1.09D.3, delete the word Engineer and substitute therefore the word VTA.
6. Contractor shall refer to the Phase II Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) Reports
for each parcel that is made available to the Contractor. The Phase II ESA Reports
will indicate the location and level of soil and/or groundwater contamination detected
for site investigations and the location and levels of controlled environmental hazards
due to the detection of asbestos containing materials or lead containing paint
materials in structures that require demolition. The reports provide comparisons to
State, local or where applicable Federal regulations for the identification of hazardous
or contaminated substances that require proper disposal to permitted landfills or as
construction debris. This includes asbestos and lead abatement, hazardous soil
removal and disposal, groundwater that may require treatment prior to disposal and
removal and disposal of underground sumps or tanks. Refer to the attached
Demolition Exhibit Drawings (C700-S-MI-D001 thru D009) for list of structures
identified for demolition with available Phase II ESA Reports. For parcels or
structures without an available Phase II ESA Report, Contractor shall assume that
conditions of the structure are similar to the nearest comparable structure with a
Phase II ESA Report. Refer to the Hazardous Remediation Matrix below for a list of
comparable structures.

E. Contractors attention is directed to the close proximity of the existing buildings shown to
be demolished on Exhibit D003 to the adjacent property to the south and east. Contractor
shall work closely with the adjacent property owner, said property being an apartment
complex with an operating day care facility adjacent to the buildings to be demolished, to
minimize disruption and maximize safety to the adjacent property and its operations. In
addition to other requirements herein, a minimum 8 high dust screen shall be provided at
the property line or at the TCE limits (both south and east sides of demolition activity as
shown on the exhibit) for the entire duration of demolition activities. No demolition work
will be allowed within 10 of the property line adjacent to the day care while the day care
has outdoor activities. Existing trees to remain, which are within the TCE area, shall be
protected in place. Damage to any tree on the adjoining property, whether within the TCE
area or not, shall be remedied at Contractors expense in accordance with Contract Section
2.4 Site Security and Maintenance.
PART 3 EXECUTION
B. Delete the words Forward to the Engineer and substitute therefor the words Forward to
the VTA.
3.02 DEMOLITION: Delete Articles 3.02A and B and substitute therefor the following:
A. Demolition
1. Perform demolition within the jurisdiction of the Cities of Milpitas and Fremont in
accordance with the approved demolition plan. Perform demolition work in
accordance with ANSI A10.6 and the California Code of Regulations, Title 8 and
Title 24, as applicable, and these Technical Specifications.
2. Perform demolition work within the jurisdiction of the City of San Jose in accordance
with ANSI A10.6 and the California Code of Regulations, Title 8 and Title 24, as
applicable, and in accordance with Section 15, Existing Facilities, of the City of
San Jose Standard Specifications.
1. Cap or plug existing public utility lines within the jurisdiction of the Cities of
Milpitas and Fremont in accordance with the utility owners standard details and
instructions and in accordance with these Technical Specifications. Cap and plug
pipes and other conduits abandoned due to demolition, with approved type caps and
plugs required by the utility owners.
2. Cap or plug public utility lines within the jurisdiction of the City of San Jose in
accordance with the utility owners standard details and instructions and in
accordance with Section 15, Existing Facilities, of the City of San Jose Standard
Specifications. Cap and plug pipes and other conduits abandoned due to demolition,
with approved type caps and plugs required by the utility owners.
3.03 REMOVAL
A. If there are existing facilities, pavements, structures, and Jobsite improvements that
interfere with planned construction and require removal, but demolition or removal is not
indicated on the Construction Drawings, the Contractor is to notify VTA immediately and
VTA will determine if the facility should be removed and will provide direction in writing.
For work within City of San Jose, removal for such items shall be done in accordance with
Section 15, Existing Facilities and Section 16, Clearing and Grubbing, of the City of
San Jose Standard Specifications. Removal requirements for items not addressed in
Section 15, Existing Facilities and Section 16, Clearing and Grubbing, of the City of
San Jose Standard Specifications, shall be provided by VTA upon written request.
C. Where a portion of existing Portland cement concrete curbs, walkways, pavement, and
other facilities are to be removed, the outline of the area to be removed shall be sawcut on a
neat line with a power-driven saw to an adequate depth to ensure a clean break, but no less
than 50 mm, prior to removing the surfacing or other facility.
D. Cuttings and waste from sawing operations shall be removed prior to entering any
waterway or inlet.
3.04 SALVAGE
In Article 3.04A delete the words Contract Drawings and as specified in the Contract
Specifications and substitute therefor the words Construction Drawings and as specified in the
Technical Specifications.
C. Delete the word Engineer and substitute therefor the word VTA
A. Removed materials, waste, trash, and debris shall become the property of the Contractor
and shall be removed from VTAs property and disposed of in a safe, legal and acceptable
manner in accordance with the waste management plan specified in Section 01 74 21
Waste Management, 01 74 25 Contaminant Management, and in accordance with the
requirements of the sustainability plan specified in Section 01 35 74 Sustainability Plan.
Within the jurisdiction of the City of San Jose, Section 16, Clearing and Grubbing, of the
City of San Jose Standard Specifications shall also apply. Location of disposal site and
length of haul shall be the Contractor's responsibility.
3.06 Delete the word CLEANUP and substitute therefor the words REMEDIATION
AND CLEANUP.
B. The site shall be left fully accessible and free of large depressions or mounds.
C. The site shall be graded to drain to the exterior in accordance with the SWPPP.

A. Attend a walk-through of the Jobsite with VTAs Authorized Representative to confirm the
acceptability of proposed means and extent of pruning and protecting of existing trees to
remain.
B. Warranty:
1. All trees to remain are to be warranted to be in good health, free of disease or injury,
until the completion of the landscape maintenance period.
3. Warranty will not include damage or loss of plants due to fires, floods, freezing rains,
lightning storms, winds over 75 mph, winter kill caused by extreme cold and severe
winter conditions not typical of the Jobsite. If loss is claimed due to these conditions,
documentation recording conditions must be provided.
PART 2 - EXECUTION
2.01 OBSERVATIONS
B. Perform work requiring corrective action, in the judgment of the VTA's Authorized
Representative, within 10 days after the observation. Complete corrective work in
accordance with the Contract Documents and at no extra cost to the VTA.
A. Before clearing, grading, soil preparation, construction or other work, construct fences
around all plants marked to be saved on landscape planting plan. Fences shall be 4 feet
high minimum, of chain link fence or other sturdy material. Distance from the base of the
tree to fence to be four feet beyond the dripline unless determined otherwise by the VTA's
Authorized Representative. Leave fences in place for the duration of the Work. Remove
and replace one by one to permit construction work or installation of irrigation system.
B. Do not store or operate heavy equipment within the above described fenced area of any
existing plant to remain, or in any way disturb soil under canopy except as required for
grading purposes.
C. When roots are exposed and must be cut during grading, each root will be cleanly cut with
appropriate pruning devices. Protect tree roots from damage by grading equipment and
from being pulled, torn, broken or cut in any way other than horticulturally appropriate.
D. Do not attach wires, ropes or other devices to any protected plant, except as needed for the
support of the tree. Do not attach any signs, other than a tag showing botanical
classification, to any protected plant.
E. Periodically spray the leaves of protected plants with water to remove buildup of dust.
F. Replace trees deemed by the VTA as failed, injured or damaged due to insufficient care.
Maintain replacements in good health.
A. Verify special protection instructions, clearance and pruning requirements with VTA's
Authorized Representative prior to beginning work.
B. Prune existing trees identified to remain on only at the direction of the VTA's Authorized
Representative, except broken or damaged growth.
1. Make all pruning cuts to lateral branches or buds or to the edge of the branch collar.
"Stubbing" will not be permitted. Where pruning is required due to close proximity of
new structures, carefully select branches to be removed. Do not prune branches only
to accommodate construction. Review with the VTA per Article 2.01.
2. Prune trees to select and develop permanent scaffold branches that are smaller in
diameter than the trunk or branch which they are attached, which have vertical
spacing of from 18" to 48" and radial orientation so as not to overlay one another; to
eliminate diseased or damaged growth; to eliminate narrow V-shaped branch forks
that lack strength; to reduce toppling and wind damage by thinning out crowns; to
maintain growth within space limitations; to maintain a natural appearance; and to
balance crown with roots; do not top trees. Do not strip lower branches of trees.
Remove all suckering growth.
3. Thin and shape evergreen trees when necessary to prevent wind and storm damage.
Do primary pruning of deciduous trees during the dormant season. Prune damaged
trees or those that constitute health or safety hazards at any time of the year as
required eliminating these conditions.
C. Where required for structural stability, provide cable supports between limbs.
Contractor is responsible for complying with all applicable regulations regarding transmittal
of plant diseases, This includes but is not limited to the provisions for Sudden Oak Death
(7CFR Part 31, Phytophthora Ramorum; Quarantine and Regulations Federal Register
Vol 67, No. 31 6827-6837, dated Thursday February 14, 2002, and any applicable updates
thereto) and other plant diseases, as well as compliance with any county-specific plant
disease requirements. The term disease is not restricted to those caused by Contractor, but
to any disease in trees which the Contractor has control over in the execution of the Work.
2.06 MAINTENANCE
A. Continuously maintain all trees to remain identified in this contract during the progress of
the Work.
B. Final inspection for acceptance of maintenance will be made at the conclusion of the
maintenance period and after all other project improvements and all corrective work have
been completed by the Contractor. If all Project improvements and all corrective work are
not completed at that time, then maintenance will continue, at no additional cost to the
VTA, until all Work is completed. The condition will be waived if the VTA's Authorized
Representative has granted an extension of time to permit the completion of a particular
portion of the Work.

SECTION 02 41 16
STRUCTURE DEMOLITION
PART 1 - GENERAL
B. Selective demolition and removal for renovation of portions of existing bridges, buildings,
and miscellaneous structures, are specified in Section 02 41 19 - Selective Structure
Demolition.
C. Temporary facilities, such as fences, barricades, warning lights, and other temporary safety
measures, are specified in Section 01 52 00 - Construction Facilities.
H. For all demolition and removal of hazardous materials including but not limited to asbestos,
ballast and underground storage tanks, refer to Section 01 74 25 Contaminant Management.

1.06 DESCRIPTION
A. Demolition as follows:

A. The Contractor shall obtain all special permits and licenses and give all notices required for
performance and completion of the structure demolition and removal work, hauling, and
disposal of debris.
1.08 SUBMITTALS
2. For submittals governing work within the railroad Right of Way or affecting railroad
operations, approval of the submittal will be contingent upon the submittal being
satisfactory to the railroad company involved. For submittals governing work within
the State or Local agency Right of Way or affecting State or Local agency operations,
approval of the submittal will be contingent upon the submittal being satisfactory to
Caltrans or the Local agency involved.
C. Permits: Submit copies of demolition, hauling, and debris disposal permits and notices for
record purposes. Include description of proposed haul routes.
E. Private Property Owner's Release: If material demolished and removed from the site will
be deposited on private property, submit two copies of written releases not less than 15 days
before the start of work. Releases shall absolve the VTA from responsibility in connection
with the depositing of material on private property, and shall be signed by the owners of
such property on which the material will be deposited.
F. Record Documents: Provide copies to the VTA of all approved submittals, specified
herein, for record purposes in accordance with the requirements of Section 01 78 39 -
Project Record Documents.

01 52 00 Construction Facilities.
2. Erect and maintain temporary bracing, shoring, lights, barricades, signs, and other
measures as necessary to protect the public, workers, and adjoining property from
damage from demolition work, all in accordance with applicable codes and
regulations.
3. Open depressions and excavations occurring as part of this work shall be barricaded
and posted with warning lights when accessible through adjacent property or through
public access. Operate warning lights during hours from dusk to dawn each day and
as otherwise required in the Contract Documents.
4. Protect utilities, pavements, and facilities from damage caused by settlement, lateral
movement, undermining, washout, and other hazards created by demolition
operations.
B. Protection of Utilities:
1. Protect active sewer, water, gas, electric, and other utilities; and drainage and
irrigation lines indicated or, when not indicated, found or otherwise made known to
the Contractor before or during demolition work. If utility is damaged, immediately
notify the utility owner for corrective action.
2. Arrange with and perform work required by utility companies and municipal
departments for discontinuance or interruption of utility services due to demolition
work.
1. Provide continuous noise and dust abatement as required to prevent disturbance and
nuisance to the public and workers and to the occupants of adjacent premises and
surrounding areas. Dampen or cover areas affected by demolition operations as
necessary to prevent dust nuisance.
2. When a certain level of noise is unavoidable because of the nature of the work or
equipment involved, and such noise is objectionable to the occupants of adjacent
premises, make arrangements with the jurisdictional authorities to perform such work
or operate such equipment at the most appropriate time periods of the day. Provide
abatement measures to the extent feasible and practicable.
D. Unknown Conditions:
1. The Contract Documents may not represent all surface conditions at the site and
adjoining areas. The known surface conditions are as indicated, and shall be
compared with actual conditions before commencement of work.
2. Existing utilities and drainage systems below grade are located from existing
documents and from surface facilities such as manholes, valve boxes, area drains, and
other such surface fixtures. The Contractor's proposed methods of demolition shall
be designed to allow for the possibility that the existing pipe, sewer, utility or other
facility are in a location that is three feet from that shown on the Design Drawings.
3. If existing active services encountered are not indicated or otherwise made known to
the Contractor and interfere with the permanent facilities under construction, notify
the VTA in writing, requesting instructions on their disposition. Take immediate
steps to ensure that the service provided is not interrupted, and do not proceed with
the work until written instructions are received from the VTA.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
A. The Contractor shall furnish all materials, tools, equipment, devices, appurtenances,
facilities, and services as required for performing the demolition and removal Work.
B. Materials used for backfill shall conform to the requirements for backfill of Section 31 00
00 -Earthwork.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
A. Record the locations and designation of survey markers and monuments affected by the
structure demolition. Provide three reference points for each survey marker and monument
removed, established by a licensed civil engineer or land surveyor currently registered in
the State of California.
B. Store removed markers and monuments during demolition work, and replace them upon
completion of the work. Re-establish survey markers and monuments in conformance with
the recorded reference points. Forward to the VTA a letter verifying re-establishment of
survey markers and monuments, signed by a licensed civil engineer or land surveyor
currently registered in the State of California.
A. Perform structure demolition and removal Work in accordance with the reviewed
demolition plan and ANSI A10.6 and the California Code of Regulations, Title 8 and Title
24, and City of San Jose Standard Specifications (for Work performed within the
jurisdiction of the City of San Jose), as applicable.
B. Structure demolition and removal of bridges, and miscellaneous structures shall also
conform to the provisions for bridge removal in Section 15-4, "Bridge Removal" of the
Caltrans Standard Specifications and these Technical Specifications.
C. Remove walls and masonry construction to a minimum depth of one foot below existing
ground level or 3 feet below finished grade, whichever is lower, in areas where such items
do not interfere with new construction.
D. Cap or plug sanitary sewer in accordance with the utility owner's standard details and
instructions. Cap and plug pipe and other conduits abandoned due to demolition, with
approved type caps and plugs as required by the utility owners.
3.03 SALVAGE
B. Protect metallic coatings on salvaged items. Remove adhering concrete from salvaged
items.
C. Repair, or replace with new material, salvaged material damaged or destroyed due to
Contractor's negligence, as determined by the VTA.
A. Dispose of removed materials, waste, trash, and debris in a safe, acceptable manner, in

1.06 DESCRIPTION

1.07 PERMITS
A. The Contractor shall obtain all special permits and licenses and give all notices required for
performance and completion of the demolition and removal work, hauling, and disposal of
debris.
1.08 SUBMITTALS
C. Permits: Submit copies of demolition, hauling, and debris disposal permits and notices for
record purposes. Include description of proposed haul routes.
E. Private Property Owner's Release: If material demolished and removed from the site will be
deposited on private property, submit two copies of written releases not more than 15 days
before the start of work. Releases shall absolve the District from responsibility in
connection with the depositing of material on private property, and shall be signed by the
owners of such property on which the material will be deposited.
F. Record Documents: Provide copies of all approved submittals, specified herein, for record
purposes in accordance with the requirements of Section 01 78 39 - Project Record

as otherwise required.
4. Protect utilities, pavements, and facilities from damage caused by settlement, lateral
movement, undermining, washout, and other hazards created by demolition
operations.
B. Protection of Utilities:
1. Protect active sewer, water, gas, electric, and other utilities; and drainage and
irrigation lines indicated or, when not indicated, found or otherwise made known to
the Contractor before or during demolition work. If utility is damaged, immediately
notify the utility owner for corrective action.
2. Arrange with and perform work required by utility companies and municipal
departments for discontinuance or interruption of utility services due to demolition
work.
1. Provide continuous noise and dust abatement as required to prevent disturbance and
nuisance to the public and workers and to the occupants of adjacent premises and

other such surface fixtures.
3. If existing active services encountered are not indicated or otherwise made known to
the Contractor and interfere with the permanent facilities under construction, notify
the Engineer in writing, requesting instructions on their disposition. Take immediate
steps to ensure that the service provided is not interrupted, and do not proceed with the
work until written instructions are received from the Engineer.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
A. The Contractor shall furnish all materials, tools, equipment, devices, appurtenances,
facilities, and services as required for performing the demolition and removal work.
B. Materials used for backfill shall conform to the requirements for backfill of Section 31 00 00
- Earthwork.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
A. Record the locations and designation of survey markers and monuments prior to their
removal. Provide three reference points for each survey marker and monument removed,
established by a licensed civil engineer or land surveyor currently registered in the State of
California.
B. Store removed markers and monuments during demolition work, and replace them upon
completion of the work. Re-establish survey markers and monuments in conformance with
the recorded reference points. Forward to the Engineer a letter verifying re-establishment of
survey markers and monuments, signed by a licensed civil engineer or land surveyor
currently registered in the State of California.
3.02 DEMOLITION
A. Perform demolition in accordance with the approved Demolition Plan. Perform demolition
work in accordance with ANSI A10.6 and the California Code of Regulations, Title 8 and
Title 24, as applicable.
B. Cap or plug sanitary sewer in accordance with the utility owner's standard details and
instructions. Cap and plug pipe and other conduits abandoned due to demolition, with
approved type caps and plugs as required by the utility owners.
3.03 REMOVAL
A. Remove existing pavements, structures, and site improvements that interfere with new
construction, where demolition is not indicated. Coordinate as required with the work of
Section 31 11 00 - Clearing and Grubbing.
B. Remove walls and masonry construction to a minimum depth of 2 feet below existing
ground level in areas where such items do not interfere with new construction.
C. Slabs may be broken for drainage and left in place where they are below grade and are not
detrimental to the structural integrity of the fill or structure to be placed above, as
determined by the Engineer.
3.04 SALVAGE
A. Salvage or reuse materials and equipment as indicated on the Contract Drawings and as
specified in the Contract Specifications.
B. Protect metallic coatings on salvaged items. Remove adhering concrete from salvaged
items.
C. Repair, or replace with new material, salvaged material damaged or destroyed due to
Contractor's negligence, as determined by the Engineer.
A. Dispose of removed materials, waste, trash, and debris in a safe, acceptable manner, in
accordance with applicable laws and ordinances and as prescribed by authorities having

Contractors property, and the Contractor shall be responsible for their removal from the
site.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 INSPECTION
B. Examine areas affected by the Work of this Section and verify the following conditions:

disturbed, except as otherwise indicated.
C. If unsatisfactory conditions exist, notify the Engineer, and do not begin demotion operations

3.02 PREPARATION
A. The limits of the site are shown on the Contract Drawings. The Contractor shall confine its
operations within the site limits indicated.
B. Lay out cutting work at the site and coordinate with related Work for which cutting is
required.
C. Review the proposed layout with the Engineer prior to performing cutting operations.
3.03 DEMOLITION
1. Perform demolition and removal work in accordance with the approved Selective
Demolition Plan. Perform demolition work in accordance with ANSI A10.6 and the
California Code of Regulations, Title 8 and Title 24, as applicable.
3. Remove items indicated for demolition within the limits of the Work and as required
to complete the Work of this Contract. Do not remove anything beyond the limits of
Work indicated without prior written approval of the Engineer. If in doubt whether to
remove an item, obtain written approval of the Engineer prior to proceeding.
4. Remove materials carefully, to the extent indicated and as required, providing for neat
and orderly junctions between existing and new materials.
5. Protect existing structures, facilities, and landscaping from damage. Items damaged as
a result of demolition operations shall be repaired or replaced, as required, at no
increase in the Contract Price.
6. Perform work so as to provide the least interference and most protection to existing
facilities and improvements to remain.
7. Demolish concrete and masonry in small sections. Perform demolition with small
tools as much as possible. Blasting will not be permitted.
B. Jackhammering:
1. Jackhammering will be permitted only to a limited degree with prior approval of the
Engineer.
3.04 CUTTING
B. Do not cut or alter structural members without the prior written approval of the Engineer.
C. Remove concrete and masonry whenever possible by saw cutting or similar approved
method.
3.05 SALVAGING
A. Certain items, as indicated, shall be salvaged and reused in the Work or delivered to a
District storage facility as directed.
B. Where salvaging is required, procedures shall be such that the maximum amount of salvage
will result.
C. Coordinate the Work of this section closely with the Work of other sections of these
Specifications requiring salvage and reuse of materials.
D. Refer to other Divisions for mechanical and electrical equipment removal and salvage
requirements.
B. Ceilings, walls, and floors shall be dusted and wiped clean with brooms and cloths or other
suitable methods as required to clean all surfaces free of dirt and dust.
C. Use suitable cleaning fluids or solvents, steel wool, blow-torch burning, scraping, and power
sanding as required to remove the various encrustations and stains, including asphalt.
D. Broom clean the entire building and site immediately after demolition is complete. Provide
a clean and orderly site in accordance with applicable requirements of Section 01 74 14 -
Cleaning.
A. Dispose of removed materials, waste, trash, and debris in a safe, acceptable manner, in
accordance with applicable laws and ordinances and as prescribed by authorities having

defects and structural weaknesses of structures partially demolished, cut, or removed; of
adjacent structures; and of improvements remaining.
B. The Engineer will accompany the Contractor before and after performance of the Work to
confirm the physical condition of the structures and improvements involved.
