Abstract

The study used the qualitative type of research and applied

action science methodology. Utilized the purposeful sampling

design specifically the convenience sampling, it made used of

readily available key informants and documents in gathering

informations in the historical background of the school.

This study made the concerned populaces cognizant about the

important events about the school during its early development.

Introduction

According to Bradshaw (2004) Historical significance is the

process used to evaluate what was significant about selected

events, people, and developments in the past. Historians use

different sets of criteria to help them make judgements about

significance.

Without history, a society shares no common memory of where

it has been, what its core values are, or what decisions of the

past account for present circumstances. Without history, we

cannot undertake any sensible inquiry into the political,

social, or moral issues in society. And without historical

knowledge and inquiry, we cannot achieve the informed,

discriminating citizenship essential to effective participation


in the democratic processes of governance and the fulfilment for

all our citizens of the nations democratic ideals

Studying history is important because it allows us to

understand our past, which in turn allows to understand our

present. If we want to know how and why our world is the way it

is today, we have to look to history for answers. People often

say that history repeats itself, but if we study the successes

and failures of the past, we may, ideally, be able to learn from

our mistakes and avoid repeating them in the future. Studying

history can provide us with insight into our cultures of origin

as well as cultures with which we might be less familiar,

thereby increasing cross-cultural awareness and understanding

Knowing the historical background of the school is very

indispensable. It provides insights of its origins, how the

school was established and develop to its present status. This

research is beneficial to the concern populace specifically the

school administrator, teachers and its clienteles. This will

also raise their awareness of the early beginnings of the school

and develop appreciation of their origins and this will also

provide the school its own identity.

With the above reason stated, the researcher tracked the

historical beginning of the school.


Purpose

This study delved with the historical development of

Sibulao Elementary School.

Methodology

This researcher focused her study primarily on the

historical development of Sibulao Elementary School. The datas

and information gathered was through informal interviews with

the identified key informants who are known to be the

descendants of the first settlers in Sibulao. The researcher

also utilized some old school files from the school archive such

as the Form 137 of the pupils for comparison of information

acquired from the key informants. It could be gleaned in the

appendices of this research some portraits from one of the key

informants taken since 1960 to 1976 to prove veracity of facts.

Findings and Analysis

The humble beginnings of Sibulao Elementary School dates

back in 1953 when Wenceslao Bernardo donated a parcel of his

land for the general welfare of the public with the goal of

educating the young minds. During its early establishment a

missionary from United States of America initiated to conduct an

informal schooling to the natives. The first settlers of

Bogtongon (now Sibulao) are the Samal Vitali and the sole

Chavacano, Manuel A. Angeles (The founder of Sibulao) who was

married to a Samal young woman and later married to a fine young

lady of Pucutin named Gertrudes Eleno. After the World War II,
the aborigines of Bogtongon didnt come back except for Manuel

A. Angeles and his family.

In 1954 when the first American missionary left, the

spouses Mr. Marcelino Perez and Mrs. Conchita Perez started the

formal schooling offering curricular programs from Grade one to

four. Mr. Perez acted as the Teacher-In-Charge.

In 1963, the spouses Mr. and Mrs. Perez transferred to

another school and the spouses Mr. and Mrs. Tahir took over.

They taught the combination classes and Mr. Tahir acted as the

T.I.C. since the school do not offer a complete curricular

programs, the pupils were force to enroll in Tagasilay

Elementary School and some stop schooling because of the remote

distance of school to their homes.

From 1964 to 1969, the spouses Mr. and Mrs. Lim were

assigned in the school, according to one of the key informant,

Mr. Lim handle the Grade one class while acting as the T.I.C. of

the school. During his term of office, in the year 1965, Mrs.

Zenaida Tee was assigned in the school.

In the year 1966, Mrs. Aurora Narvaez-Bucoy was assigned in

Sibulao E/S as an additional teacher, handling Grade five to

six.

In 1967, a certain Ms. Victoria Sebastian was assigned in

the school as an additional teacher.

In 1968, when the spouses Mr. and Mrs. Tahir transferred to

Tagasilay E/S, Mr. Ernesto Taliti and Mr. Abdurahman B.


Abdulpatta were their supplant and it was during the school year

1968-1969 that the school has produced the first batch of

graduates. Among the graduates was Henedina Eleno Angeles, the

class Valedictorian.

In September 22, 1972 another American missionary came to

teach in the school, named Doyal Joseph Hunter. He taught the

young and old to speak, read and write in English.

As per record of the school files kept in the archive, in

1975 Mrs. Zenaida A. Columbres was assigned as the class adviser

of the Grade six pupils under the leadership of Mr. Bonifacio

Dumadag.

Conclusion

The datas obtained in this research are authentic but not

adequate in tracing the establishment of the school but this

will served as a good avenue for other researchers to conduct

further studies in tracing the early establishment of Sibulao

Elementary School.

Further Action/Recommendation

The school administrator and teachers may utilize the

datas gathered in developing the School Improvement Plan (SIP)

and research work regarding the school and community.

Researchers may conduct further studies to augment the

findings of this research.
