Objectives
(C). Students will learn about the Mayan culture through studying their art
(C & P). Students will utilize geometric shapes and complimentary colors to create an
abstract mask of their own, after the style of the Mayan culture
(C & A). Students will explain the significance of their mask and could be worn in an
assembly or part of a play about the Mayans with what the students learned

Social Studies

Vocabulary
Geometric shapes set of points or vertices and lines connecting the points in a closed
chain, as well as the resulting interior points
Complimentary colors colors directly opposite of each other in color spectrum; such as
red and green or blue and orange
Space positive space and negative space, where do you want the observer to look, area
between, around, above, below
Color variety of color; grabs viewers attention, visual sensation dependent on the
reflection or absorption of light from a given surface

Pedagogy
Groups of three or four students who will have a picture of different Mayan masks
and they will discuss the differences or uniqueness of the mask, importance of the
mask, or how the culture is shown through the mask
Have each group stand in front of class giving the importance of their picture of the
mask, discuss uniqueness and how they think the mask represents the culture
Have each student individually think on how their mask will be unique
Briefly talk about vocabulary words while discussing the importance of Mayans

What do you think of when you think of a Mayan?
What would your Mayan mask represent?
What significant complimentary color or geometric shape would your mask have?
Each student can either use a 12 X 18 large sheet of white paper, fabric, or
cardboard using geometric shapes to create an abstract sort of mask
Color mask with markers or tempera paint using only one set of complimentary
colors
When mask is complete they are able to cut them out and tie with a string
Mask could be used in an assembly or part of a play about the Mayans

Assessment
Formative Assessment
Ask individual students how their masks help them remember the importance of
the Mayans
Ask students why they choose that specific geometric shape/complimentary color
Summative Assessment
The class will be doing a short play at the Mayan assembly where they will
perform allowing audience/viewers to see their projects.

Adaptations
If I had a student for this activity who didnt have the appropriate fine motor skill usage I
could have a student help them by cutting their mask out, or providing the help when
needed.

12 x 18 white paper
String
Markers
Scissors
Tempera paint
Pencils
Black marker
Any items that are available may be used; BE CREATIVE!
