1 Scope
This standard defines the minimum requirements for cross tension force and torque after welding
(fused joints) that, so far, have been defined in the product standards for weld nuts.
These requirements apply especially for
square weld nuts according to Volkswagen standards VW 604 49, VW 604 42, VW 604 32
hexagon weld nuts according to VW 604 55, VW 601 61, DIN 929
round weld nuts according to VW 603 43 (draft)
speed nuts according to VW 604 40
with measurements of M4 to M12 (metric standard screw thread), M12 x 1.5 to M16 x 1.5

3 Definitions
The following definitions are valid for the application of this standard:
4 Requirements
4.2 Test parameters for minimum cross tension force and minimum torque
After welding onto steel sheets, weld nuts, welded bolts and weld pins must withstand the minimum
cross tension forces listed in Table 1, weld nuts must also withstand the minimum torques as
stated in Table 1. The thread diameter shall provide a reference value in all cases.
The values given in Table 1 apply for sheet steels with a sheet thickness of 0.5 to 4 mm. Linear
interpolation shall apply for values up to the maximum sheet thickness. For higher sheet
thicknesses, the material must tear out of the joining plane; in such cases, the requirements for
maximum sheet thickness apply.
The minimum torque values apply for the welded joint and are calculated in such a manner that the
welded joint will not loosen even if the thread breaks. This requirement is important due to the
partially restricted accessibility, which makes a replacement in case of repairs a very intricate
procedure.

If the nut or bolt unplugs from the sheet metal, i.e. is torn out, during the minimum torque test
(possible with lower sheet thicknesses), lower minimum torques shall be specified in the
ASSY drawing.
