BPHE-101: Ans 1 B) I)

This document contains solutions to physics problems from BPHE-101. The first problem involves calculating the distance a spring compresses when a 2kg block is dropped from 40cm onto it, given the spring constant. The solution shows setting up conservation of mechanical energy and solving for the compression distance. The second problem calculates angular acceleration of an object given the torque and moment of inertia. The third problem calculates the total energy of a satellite orbiting a planet using gravitational potential energy and orbital eccentricity equations.

BPHE-101

Ans 1 b) i): A block of mass 2.0kg is dropped from height h=40cm onto a spring of spring
constant k=1960 N/m.

Relevant equations KE initial + PE initial = KE final + PE final KE = 1/2(mass)(velocity)^2

PE = mgh or, when dealing with a spring, PE = 1/2 (k)(compression distance)^2

The attempt at a solution The initial velocity is zero, so the initial KE is zero The final height is
zero so the final PE is zero 2kg(9.8)(.7m) = (1/2)(1960)x^2

where x is the distance the spring is compressed solve for x.... x = .118m

Ans b) ii):

M = 40 kg/s

v = 5 m/s

F = mv = 40 x 5 = 200 N Ans

Ans 1 d):
Newton's Second Law of Rotational Motion relates the torque to the moment of inertia and angular
acceleration as
=I
We are interested in the angular acceleration, so we divide both sides of the equation by the moment of
inertia to get
=/I
2 2 2
= ( 6 N m) / (3.0 kg m ) = (2 m kg m / s ) / (kg m )
2
= 2.0 rad / s

Ans 3 a):

BPHE-101
Solution 2 a):

Given h = 1000 km = 1.0 x 106m

G = 6.67 x 10-11 Nm2 kg-2

Me = 6.0 x 10 24kg

Ra= 3500 km = 3.5 x 106 m

m = 1000 kg

Eccentricity = - GMm / 2(R+ h) = 6.67 x 10-11 x 6.0 x 10 24 x 1000 / 2 (3.5+1.0) x 106

= - 40.02 x 1016/ 9 x 106

= - 4.45 x 1010 J

B. E = - T.E = - (- 4.45 x 1010 J) = 4.45 x 1010 J
