Sentence variation is using different types of sentences - simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex - in writing. Varying sentence structure adds flavor and drama to writing by experimenting with sentence length. The four main sentence types are simple sentences with one clause, compound sentences with multiple independent clauses, complex sentences with one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses, and compound-complex sentences with multiple independent and dependent clauses. Additional ways to vary sentences include starting sentences with prepositional or present participial phrases or shortening and lengthening simple sentences for effect.
