Geotechnical Engineering

This document contains 3 questions from a Geotechnical Engineering exam. Question 1 asks about the compression index formula and calculating coefficients from a consolidation test. Question 2 asks about failure envelopes for different soil types and determining shear parameters from triaxial test results. Question 3 asks about calculating lateral earth pressures on a retaining wall, the thrust magnitude and point, and how thrust changes with a rising water table.

GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING-I

DCE/II/4TH SEM/2ND INTERNAL,

TIME ALLOWED:1 HR. FM=20
ANSWER ANY 2:
Q1. a) State and give expression for Compression index.
b) In a laboratory consolidation test, the void ratio of the sample reduced from 0.85 to 0.73 as the pressure was
increased from 1 to 2 kg/cm2. If the co-efficient of permeability of the soil be 3.3 x 10 -4 cm/sec, determine:
co-efficient of volume change (ii) co-efficient of consolidation. 4+6

Q2. a) Show the failure envelope diagram of c, Phi and c-Phi soil.
b) Three identical specimens of partially saturated clay were subjected to an unconsolidated undrained triaxial test
and the following results were obtained:
Sample No Cell Pressure (kg/cm2) Deviator stress (kg/cm2)
1 0.5 0.8
2 1.0 0.97
3 1.5 1.13

Determine the shear parameters of the soil analytically. 2+8

Q3. A 5 m high rigid retaining wall has to retain a backfill of dry, cohesionless soil having the following properties:
= 30, e = 0.74, G= 2.68, =0.36. (i) Plot the distribution of lateral earth pressure on the wall, (ii) Determine the
magnitude and point of application of the resultant thrust. (iii) Compute the percent change in the lateral thrust if the
water table rises from a great depth to the top of the backfill. 10
