STRUCTURES GENERAL

1. General

A. This chapter describes general repair practices, materials and typical


repairs which are applicable throughout the subsequent chapters of the
manual. In addition, data regarding shoring, exterior surface general
tolerances, and control surface balancing is included.

B. Stations/Zoning

To facilitate maintenance planning, preparation of job instructions,


location of work areas, access panels and components, the aircraft is
zoned following 51-00-02.

DEFECT/DAMAGE REPORTING

1. General

A. Reason

Considering that most of the repairs designed by manufacturer are made


using only drawings, defect/damage reports must be done with a special
attention in order to provide manufacturer with any information that would
have been procured about the damage by a manufacturer engineer.

This topic defines the procedure to report a defect or damage to


manufacturer with a view to meeting the following requirements :
- Give all the necessary information to manufacturer to perform the repair.
- Provide the customer with a repair scheme as quickly as possible.
- Reduce the A/C grounding time.
- Action is taken to prevent further occurrence of the damage.
Thus, support to customers will be accurate and efficient.

NOTE: For general information about damage classification or allowable


damage see chapter 51-10-00.

B. Technical documentation to be used for report.

Publications can be used for identification and location of the item or


area affected by defect or damage :
- Structural Repair Manual (SRM), Page Block 100.
- Structural Repair Kit Manual (SRKM).
- Illustrated Parts Catalog (IPC).
- Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM).
- Non Destructive Testing Manual (NTM)

C. Repair Approach

Flow chart (Table 1).

This flow chart provides a sequence of advisable steps to be followed when


a report is issued.

WARNING: ANY DAMAGE DESCRIBED USING SKETCH, TRACING, PLAN, DRAWING, RUBBING
OR PHOTOGRAPH SHOULD BE PROPERLY AND PRECISELY LOCATED ON THE PLANE
STRUCTURE (POSITION, DIMENSION ON TWO SIDES, ORIENTATION, ...). YOU
CAN USE SUCCESSIVE ZOOMING SKETCHES, BEGINNING WITH THE A/C LAYOUT
(OVERALL LOCATION) AND ENDING WITH THE DAMAGED AREA (EXACT
LOCATION).

IN CASE OF SEVERAL DAMAGES, IDENTIFY EACH INDIVIDUAL DAMAGE BY A


SKETCH WITH A CROSS-REFERENCE NUMBER.

WHENEVER POSSIBLE, LOCATE DAMAGE WITH RESPECT TO ADJACENT


STRUCTURAL DETAIL (FRAMES, STRINGERS, RIBS, ...) AND GIVE DISTANCE
BETWEEN THE DAMAGE AND THE DETAILS.

GIVE P/N OF ALL THE ELEMENTS INVOLVED IN THE DAMAGE.

D. Sketches

- The extent of a defect/damage can be shown on a sketch. This method is


very suitable for transmission by fax to manufacturer.

- The sketch should show all relevant dimensions, as accurate as possible.

- A dimension scale on two sides should be provided to enable manufacturer


to make allowances for distorsion caused by fax transmission.

- To make these sketches, it is possible to use photocopies of existing SRM


illustrations and/or production drawings.

NOTE: It is recommended in order to determine the deformation or worn


profile to transmit map as for examples given in Fig. 1 and 2.

E. Tracing

Tracing paper is the most usefull and efficient mean to report a damage.
- the damage is copied scale 1/1
- almost any kind of damage can be reported by this way (corrosion, dent,
crack, scratch, wear, ...)
- it is possible to send it by fax.

(1) Place the tracing paper on damage

(2) Trace the damage contour

(3) Trace the adjacent existing fasteners and locate distance of one or two
points to adjacent seams or structural details.

(4) Remove tracing paper from tracing area, report dimension scale on sheet
or photocopy.

(5) Give accurate values of deformation profile at level of substructure


seams.

(6) In case of damage greater than the A4 size, you can cut the tracing
paper and/or make several overlapping photocopies. Marks at the
overlaps (or limits) will help further reconstitution of the original
configuration of the sheets (see Fig. 3).

(7) If possible the sheet will cover the adjacent seams or structure
details (cut-out, stringers, frames, ribs, ...).

F. Rubbing

- To obtain a rubbing, place a piece of opaque or transparent paper over


the defect/damage and rub with a blunt pencil.

- This method is good for showning the shape of the defect/damage and for
accurately positioning sharp edged damage to any adjacent fastener.

- In the case of smooth edged damage (e.g. dents or blended corrosion)


rubbings are not very suitable.

- Furthermore, transmission of rubbings by fax is difficult.

G. Photographs

- Take photographs of a defect/damage when ever possible. Although it is


impossible to transmit than by fax, they are very helpful when used in
addition to one of the other methods or transmitted with the initial
report.

- Photographs of details and general views should be taken.

- Before taking a photograph, identify the adjacent structure (e.g. ribs,


frames and stringers) with a marker pen or masking tape. When the
photograph is taken, remove the masking tape.

The identification should give the orientation of the piece.

- before taking a photograph, a rule should be put aside the damage (if
possible) in order to give the scale of the photograph.

- It is possible to send advance copy of photographs by fax, but due to


their unsuitability for transmittal by fax, all photographs must also be
sent by mail.

2. How to transmit a report

- The most commonly used ways to transmit a report to Manufacturer Technique


Department are Telephone and Fax.

- This is what should be done first to inform manufacturer about the defect
and/or damage.

- It is recommended to prepare the report before calling and to transmit it,


with sketches or tracings, by fax, for support of discussion.

- Furthermore, the person preparing the report, should be familiar with the
problem and able to answer any question asked by ATR, immediately.

- The phone call is an economic and quick means to convey the information.

- Whenever possible, inform recipient by telephone that urgent damage report


are being sent. It is not uncommon for documents not to arrive.

- Details can become distorted during transmittal therefore all pictorial


sheets should have two scale lines, at right angles to each other, with
their written dimension alongside.

- All text should be in bold black capitals. Information should not extend to
the full width of an A4 sheet to the edges often being lost in transmission.

- When transmitting large sheets that require cutting into sections, ensure
good overlap. Provide positive identification of each sheets relationship.
This can be achieved by individual numbering of sheets related with a sketch
plan indicating how the numbering sheets are related to each other
(see Fig. 3).

NOTE:

- when available, e-mail is good way to tramsit drawings, photographs or


additonal information. Inform recipient by telephone that information are
being sent by e-mail (and verify the electronic address).
It is not uncommon for documents not to arrive.

3. Follow-up

A. When the operator prepares the report, he shoub by to identify the cause of
the defect/damage.

- If the cause is easy to determine, (e.g. debris from a buest tire), this
information should be mentioned in the initial report.

B. In the case of a major incident (e.g. crack, nose landing gear colapse,
impact by a truck, crash...) it is recommended to take all the precautions
to prevent additional damages that could be caused during the recovery
operation.

- Therefore the on-site reporters should use all the facilities available
to make an assessment of the defect/damage.

C. If necessary, structural items or components cracked or fractured should be


sent to manufacturer. No attempt should be made to open the crack, only the
minimum drawing necessary for transit should be done on these items.

- Fractured items should be wrapped separately before being packed for


transit.

D. Whilst carrying out the damage rectification, personnel should be


encouraged to report:

- any additional damage found


- any inaccuracies in drawings or written text provided
- suggested improvements to repair methods, component replacement or
procedures.

4. Report method

A proposed reporting method in detailed below. The following information


should be mentioned on the report.

A. Report for cracks

(1) Reporter's function,

(2) Aircraft type,

(3) Manufacturer Serial Number (MSN),

(4) Defect/Damage occurence or finding date,

(5) Number of flight hours and flights,

(6) P/N, item of affected component,

(7) Component serial number, modification, status, number of flight hours


and flights,

(8) Details of defect/damage finding (scheduled/unscheduled maintenance,


corrosion prevention, during embodiment of a Service Bulletin, etc...),

(9) Detail of crack (Ref. Fig. 4).

NOTE: All dimensions used are in mm or inch.

- position of hole (when applicable) from which the crack starts,


- length, on both side of the element if possible,
- direction,
- depth of initial indication from surface,
- depth of final indication from surface,
- specify surface from which measurements were taken.

(10) Inspection method used :


- visual inspection,
- detailed visual inspection,
- special detailed inspection (Nondestructive Testing).

(11) Customer's requirements :


- temporary repair for specified number of flights,
- permission to defer final action for specified number of flights,
- final repair.

(12) Additional information.

B. Report for defect/damage other than cracks.

Impact: in case of external impacts, obvious distortion at the level of


substructure seams will lead ot internal inspections. It is important to
know the complete extend of damage, this includes frames, stringers, ribs,
etc.

(1) Apply steps in 4.A.(1) to 4.A.(6).

(2) Type of defect/damage (chapter 51-10-00).

(3) Suspected cause of defect/damage.

(4) Type of material affected.

(5) Location of defect/damage (chapters 52 to 57 Page Block 100, and/or


locate defect by reference to fasteners).

(6) Relevant dimensions.

(7) Details of any secondary damage.

(8) Details of any unusual events (spillage, heavy landing).

(9) Apply steps in 4.A.(11) and 4.A.(12).

C. Look for:

Denting:
- Determine the extend of the denting.
- Find if the dent is hard or flexible (i.e. will it pop in and out to the
touch).
- Inspect the area for cracks (close visual inspection, dye
penetrant, ...).
- Determine if the dent passes over underlying structures.

Scores:
- Determine the depth and size of the score.
- Inspect the area for cracks.

Delamination:
- Inspect for delamination of bonded structure.
- Determine how far the delamination extends.

Underlying structure:
- Determine if the damage extends beyond surface to structure such as
stringers, frames and buttstraps.
- Draw a separate illustration of the damage.

Fasteners:
- Look if there is any fastener damaged, and if so to what extent.
- Highlight them on the damage diagrams.

Corrosion:
- Remove all corrosion in accordance with SRM 51-21-42.
- Determine if there is any evidence of previous corrosion blending and if
so supply Manufacturer with details.
- Determine the thickness of sound material remaining.

Existing repairs:
- Look for any existing repairs in the immediate vicinity of the reported
damage.
- Give details to Manufacturer.

Bonding:
- If the damage is in a bonded area, check the bond.

5. Specific Damage Report

Use the structural defect/damage report (SDR) at the end of this chapter. If
necessary, attach any other document about the damage that can be useful for
Manufacturer.

Some particular kinds of defect/damage report form are given in the concerned
chapter (ex. engine mount tubes, front and rear wing spar strip slat, etc.).

The goals of these forms are to uniformize the presentation of the damage
reports, to make sure that no essential information is forgotten and to improve
the quality of the support.

51-00-02 - AIRCRAFT ZONING

1. Introduction

The aircraft is broken down into zones, thus providing an easy location of
systems/sub-systems/components or structure elements.

The system adopted is based on A.T.A. 100 Specification.

Zone references are primarily used for identifying the various compartments of
the aircraft for such purpose as:

Maintenance, planning, inspection, Job Cards, access panel entry, location of


work areas, etc...

2. Zoning System

The system is based on three figure groups which are made up as follows:

- Major Zones and Sections

- Major Sub-Zones

- Specific Zones

All zones are identified by a three-digit number.

Locations and boundaries of the ATR42 Major Zones, Major Sub-Zones and
Specific Zones are illustrated and described on the following pages.

A. Major Zones and Sections (Ref. Fig. 1 thru 4)

Whenever feasible, odd numbers are allocated to the zones left of


fuselage centerline, and even numbers to zones to the right, e.g.:
