Lesson Plan

This lesson plan is for a second grade geometry lesson on shapes that will last 50 minutes. The objectives are for students to be able to name shapes according to their number of edges and vertices. Materials include study books, worksheets, index cards, markers and tape. The introduction will discuss shape attributes. Instructional activities include identifying shapes in the classroom and concentrating on squares and rectangles. Worksheets follow the activities. Differentiated instruction is provided through visual, kinesthetic and auditory learning. Student understanding will be evaluated through observation and worksheet assessment. The closure asks students to name objects around the classroom.

Instructional Project 4 Lesson Plan

Date: 06/05/2017

Teacher Name: Mrs. Norman

Grade: Second Grade

Lesson: Geometric Shapes

Content Area: Mathematics-Geometry

Time Line of Lesson: 50 minutes

CCSS Objectives:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.G.A.1
Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of
angles or a given number of equal faces.1 Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons,
hexagons, and cubes.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.G.A.2
Partition a rectangle into rows and columns of same-size squares and count to find the
total number of them.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.G.A.3
Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares
using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two
halves, three thirds, four fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need
not have the same shape.

Lesson Objectives:
Students will be able to name shapes according to the number of edges and vertices.

Materials:
Study books, activity worksheet, index cards, markers, tape.

Introduction:
Discuss the shape attributes as a class. Great discussion questions include: How many
sides does a triangle, a square, a rectangle? Are they straight or curved? How many
corners does a triangle, a square, a rectangle have?
Discuss the real world shapes.
Instructional Activities:
The class will be asked to identify what shapes they see in the classroom. As each
shape is mentioned, the teacher will put it on the board so the class has a visual aid.
We will be studying two dimensional shapes first and concentrating on the square and
rectangle for the day.
There are also recording sheets following the activities if this will help your students stay
focused.
Noticings: Put a basket of shapes in the middle of the group. Have each child select
one shape. Each child shares what they notice about their shape.
Choose Two: Have each child select two shapes. Each child then shares one thing that
makes their two shapes similar.
Shape in the Middle: One shape is selected from the basket and placed in the middle
of the group. As a group the children make one noticing about the selected shape. ( it
has a curve, it has three corners, etc. )The children then sort through the basket to find
all of the shapes that fit their rule.
Shape in the Middle Extension: Children share their rule with the class. All children in
the class then draw their own shape to fit the groups rule.Once they have found the
rule, have students find shapes that fit the rule.

Differentiated Instruction:
There were four tables and five students sat each table. The class was
nineteen regular students and one special education student. There are
different learning style which is a virtual, kinesthetic and auditory. They
were having hard time to concentrate but they interacted with each other
the activity time.

Evaluation Assessment:
Observe them on how they are doing with this new knowledge and review
shapes on the list .Use these sheets as assessment of students ability to
identify geometric shapes and apply their knowledge in a real world setting.

Closure:

Ask students to look around the classroom and name objects with
three, four or five edges.
Make a list of all the objects.

Worksheet:

1) A Shapes Jungle
2) Match Shapes
3) Name and Colour Shapes
