CCSS Objectives:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.G.A.1
Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of
angles or a given number of equal faces.1 Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons,
hexagons, and cubes.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.G.A.2
Partition a rectangle into rows and columns of same-size squares and count to find the
total number of them.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.G.A.3
Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares
using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two
halves, three thirds, four fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need
not have the same shape.
Lesson Objectives:
Students will be able to name shapes according to the number of edges and vertices.
Materials:
Study books, activity worksheet, index cards, markers, tape.
Introduction:
Discuss the shape attributes as a class. Great discussion questions include: How many
sides does a triangle, a square, a rectangle? Are they straight or curved? How many
corners does a triangle, a square, a rectangle have?
Discuss the real world shapes.
Instructional Activities:
The class will be asked to identify what shapes they see in the classroom. As each
shape is mentioned, the teacher will put it on the board so the class has a visual aid.
We will be studying two dimensional shapes first and concentrating on the square and
rectangle for the day.
There are also recording sheets following the activities if this will help your students stay
focused.
Noticings: Put a basket of shapes in the middle of the group. Have each child select
one shape. Each child shares what they notice about their shape.
Choose Two: Have each child select two shapes. Each child then shares one thing that
makes their two shapes similar.
Shape in the Middle: One shape is selected from the basket and placed in the middle
of the group. As a group the children make one noticing about the selected shape. ( it
has a curve, it has three corners, etc. )The children then sort through the basket to find
all of the shapes that fit their rule.
Shape in the Middle Extension: Children share their rule with the class. All children in
the class then draw their own shape to fit the groups rule.Once they have found the
rule, have students find shapes that fit the rule.

Choose Two
Directions: Choose two shapes from the basket. Find one way
they are alike.
Evaluation Assessment:
Observe them on how they are doing with this new knowledge and review
shapes on the list .Use these sheets as assessment of students ability to
identify geometric shapes and apply their knowledge in a real world setting.
Closure:
Ask students to look around the classroom and name objects with
three, four or five edges.
Make a list of all the objects.
Worksheet:
1) A Shapes Jungle
2) Match Shapes
3) Name and Colour Shapes
