ThefoundationischairedbyTonRoosendaal,theoriginalauthoroftheBlendersoftware.Itisfundedby
donationsfromentrepreneurs,companies,andthecommunity.Oneofthefoundationsgoalsis"togivethe
worldwideInternetcommunityaccessto3Dtechnologyingeneral,withBlenderasacore".[4]

Thefoundationprovidesvariousresourcestosupportthecommunityformedaroundusinganddeveloping
Blender.Inparticular,itorganizesanannualBlenderConferenceinAmsterdam[5]todiscussplansforthe
futureofBlender,aswellasstaffingaboothtorepresentBlenderatSIGGRAPH,[6][7]alargeconferenceon
computergraphics.DonationsarealsousedtomaintaintheBlenderwebsite,aswellashireotherdevelopersto
workontheBlendersoftware.[4]

Openprojects
TheBlenderFoundationhasorganizedseveralcommunitydriven"OpenProjects"throughitsaffiliated
BlenderInstituteprogram,includingseveralfreelylicensedfilmsandafree,opensourcevideogame.[8]
AccordingtotheFoundation,theseprojectsareintended"tovalidateandimprovethe3Dopensourcecontent
creationpipelinewithBlender".EachprojectwascreatedusingtheBlendersoftwareandreleasedunder
permissivelicenseterms,alongwiththesourcematerial.Inadditiontodemonstratingthecapabilitiesofthe
software,theOpenProjectsprovideddetailedproductionmaterial(sketches,tutorials,texturesandmodels,
etc.)toserveasexamplesfortheBlenderusercommunity,aswellasfinishedproductsthatcouldbewidely
usedforotherpurposes.[9]

On18March2006,theBlenderFoundationreleaseditsfirstfilm,ElephantsDream.[10]Inresponsetothe
successofElephantsDream,theBlenderFoundationestablishedtheBlenderInstitutetosupportfuture
softwareandcontentdevelopmentprojects.TheBlenderInstituteoperatesoutofastudiowithinthe
EntrepotdokbuildinginAmsterdam,wheretheBlenderFoundationisalsolocated,andisheadedbyTon
Roosendaal.

On10April2008,theBlenderInstitutereleaseditssecondfilm,BigBuckBunny.[11][12][13]Basedonthemovie,
theBlenderInstitutereleaseditsfirstOpenGameprojectYoFrankie!,inNovember2008.

On30September2010theBlenderInstitutereleaseditsthirdproject,
Sintel.

InOctober2011,Concept/ScriptDevelopmentbeganforBlender's
latestopenfilmprojecttitledTearsofSteel.Contrarytoprevious
BlenderInstituteprojects,whichwere100%computergraphics,the
focusofTearsofSteelwasthecombinationofliveactionfootagewith Sintel,fullmovieathighresolution
computergeneratedcharactersandenvironments.Theliveaction
footagewasshotwithahighendSonyF65camera.Theprojectwasreleasedon26September2012.[14]

TheGooseberryOpenMovieProjectisthefifthOpenMovieProjectinitiatedbytheBlenderFoundation.Ton
RoosendalannouncedtheprojectinJanuary2010.[15][16]Themostambitiousprojectyet,oneoftheprimary
goalsisfortheGooseberryOpenMovieProjecttobethefirstfulllengthfilmproducedbytheBlender
Institute.Workonthefilm,calledCosmosLaundromat,beganin2014[17](althoughareleasedatewasnotyet
announced).Atenminutepilot,entitledCosmosLaundromat:FirstCyclewasreleasedonYouTubeon10
August2015[18]andpremieredattheNetherlandsFilmFestivalon24September2015.[19]Thepilotwonthe
Jury'sPrizeatAnimago2015,[20]aninternationalconferencefor3Danimation.

In2013,thesecondepisodeofashortanimatedseriesCaminandeswasreleasedundertheBlenderFoundation
umbrella.[21]In2016,athirdshortwasreleased.
