Lesson idea implementation:

Students will learn about the language of geography by using instructional software from
BrainPop. All students will watch the tutorial video about Geography Themes. Students will then be
able to explore the other available topics independently and select one on which to focus. They can
use any of the resources on BrainPop to enhance their understanding of their selected geography
subject. While students are going through the instructional activities, the teacher will be monitoring
progress by checking in with students and watching them work at computers. Students will need to
pass the Quiz part of their topic and the teacher will confirm the students comprehension level.
Once the student has passed the quiz, he or she will move on to the creation part of the activity
by collaborating with three to four other students in a small group. They will use the Mapping tool in
BrainPop to create a mind map of the topic they selected and studied. Students will present their mind
maps to the class and print them so they can be easily displayed in the hallway or school library.
To extend the LoTi level of this activity, the class could invite a cartographer to visit their
class and help them to create a map of the area using appropriate productivity software that could be
provided to families that are new to the district.
