Step1
Downloadthephotobelowfromhttp://tigerteched.pbworks.com/imagesandopenupthe
Gimp.Openupthephotowejustdownloaded.GotoSelect>All,copy&pasteontoanew
layer.Deletetheoriginallayer.


Step2
Nowweneedtoaddsometext.Atthispoint,goaheadandusetheTextToolandtypein
whateveryouwantyourgraffititosayandselectafont(weuseNosegrindbelow).Positionand
sizeit.Don'tworryabouttheperspectiverightnow.Wewillgettothatlater.Namethislayer

Step3
Nowwelladdalittlebitofabackgroundandastroke(border)tothetext.Createanewlayer
underneaththetextlayerandnameit"text_bg."Rightclickontheoriginaltextlayerandselect
AlphatoSelectionthiscreatesaselectionaroundthetext.GotoSelect>Growonthemenu
toexpandtheselection.Growby15pixels.Selectthetext_bglayerandfilltheselectionwith
whiteusingtheBucketFilltool.

Createanewlayerabovethetextlayerandnameit"text_gradient."Rightclicktheoriginaltext
layerandselectAlphatoSelectionthiscreatesaselectionaroundthetext.Changethe
foregroundcolorto#00a2ffandthebackgroundcolorto#383838.Youcanchangethecolorby
doubleclickingonthecolorsinthetoolbarontheleft.Thecoloronthetopistheforeground
colorandthecoloronbottomisthebackgroundcolor.TypethosecolornumbersintheHTML
notationfield.Theforegroundisablueandthebackgroundisadarkgrey.

SelecttheBlendTool andapplyagradientfromtoptobottomofthetextonthe
text_gradientlayer.Clickjustabovethetextandthenreleasejustbelowthetext.Thetext
shouldfadefrombluetogrey.GotoSelect>Nonetoremovetheselection.

Mergeallthelayersthatmakeupthetextbyrightclickingonthetopgradientlayerandselect
mergedown.Repeatthisforalltextlayers.Intheend,youshouldhaveasingletextlayerand
thebackground.GotoFilters>LightandShadow>DropShadow.SettheX&Yradiito20and
theblurradiusto0.Uncheckallowresizing.Settheopacityto70%.Hitok.Mergethetextlayer
withthenewshadowlayerbyrightclickingonthetextlayerandselectingmergedown.Our
textisdone.


Step4
Setthelayermodeofthetext'slayertoOverlay.YoudothisbychangingtheModefieldjust
abovethelistoflayers.

Atthispoint,thetextlooksalittletoosharptobespraypaint.Let'sfixthat.Duplicatethetext
layer.YoucandothisbyrightclickingonthetextlayerandselectingDuplicateLayer.Move
theduplicatelayerunderneaththeoriginaltextlayer.Withtheduplicatedlayerselected,goto
Filters>Blur>GaussianBlur.Enter30forbothvalues.Hitok.Rightclicktheoriginaltextlayer
andhittheAlphatoSelectionoption.Selecttheduplicatelayerandhitthedeletebutton.This
deletesthetextfromtheduplicatelayerandjustleavestheblurwejustadded.

Step5
Usetheerasertooloonbothtextlayerstoerasethepartsofthetextcoveringthepole.
ExpandthesizeoftheeraserbychangingtheScaleoftheErasertool.Thetoolpropertiesare
foundjustbelowtheTools.

Step6
Letsaddonemoreeffect.GotoEdit>CopyVisible,andthengotoEdit>PasteAs>NewLayer.
Onthenewlayerthatjustpoppedup,gotoFilters>Blur>GaussianBlur.Enter10forboth
valuesandhitok.SettheLayermodetoOverlay(seestep4forinfoondoingthis).Thisadds
someadditionalcontrasttotheimage.

Conclusion
Thereyouhaveit.Asimplewaytocreatesomegraffiti.Justrememberthatyoushouldnever
useasmoothwallonlytextured/roughones.Makestheeffectmorerealistic.
