Ex 1817

This document provides exercises related to a graduate course in statistical mechanics. Exercise 1817 considers an ideal gas of spin-1/2 particles with magnetic moments in a magnetic field. It asks the student to: 1) Calculate the total entropy as a sum of kinetic and spin contributions. 2) Derive a relationship between initial and final temperatures for an adiabatic process where the magnetic field is reduced to zero. 3) Solve for the final to initial temperature ratio in the limit of a large initial magnetic field. 4) Generalize the temperature ratio solution to systems with different dimensionality and spin values.

Exercises in Statistical Mechanics

Based on course by Doron Cohen, has to be proofed

Department of Physics, Ben-Gurion University, Beer-Sheva 84105, Israel

This exercises pool is intended for a graduate course in statistical mechanics. Some of the
problems are original, while other were assembled from various undocumented sources. In partic-
ular some problems originate from exams that were written by B. Horovitz (BGU), S. Fishman
(Technion), and D. Cohen (BGU).

====== [Exercise 1817]

Adiabatic cooling of spins

Consider an ideal gas whose N atoms have mass m, spin 1/2 and a magnetic moment . The kinetic energy of a
particle is p2 /(2m) and the interaction with the magnetic field B is B for up/down spins.

(a) Calculate the entropy as S(T, B) = Skinetic + Sspin .

(b) Consider an adiabatic process in which the magnetic field is varied from B to zero. Show that the initial and
final temperatures Ti and Tf are related by the equation:

Tf 2
ln = [Sspin (Ti , B) Sspin (Tf , 0)]
Ti 3N

Tf
(c) Find the solution for Ti in the large B limit.

(d) Extend (c) to the case of space dimensionality d and general spin S.
