Microteach

The lesson focuses on teaching students about the circulatory system and heart rate. Students will observe a pump demonstration to understand how the heart works as a pump. They will then take their own pulse and observe how exercise impacts heart rate by doing jumping jacks with a partner and recording their heart rate before and after. The formative assessment is the partner activity and discussion, while the summative assessment is a circulation worksheet to assess learning. The teacher notes they should have organized partnering more clearly and explained the activity steps better.

EDUC 2500A/Griffioen Lesson/Date: Focus on Planning

Stage 1: Desired Results

Learning Science-Cells and Systems-Grade 8
Outcome(s)
describe, in general terms, body systems for respiration, circulation, digestion, excretion and
sensory awareness
describe changes in body functions in response to changing conditions

Learning Students will:

Objectives - Observe the heart as a pump through a demonstration by the instructor and observe how to take
pulse
- Observe changes in heart rate after exercise
- Assess knowledge of heart and circulatory system on Circulation Worksheet

Stage 2: Assessment Evidence

Formative Scientific Inquiry Summative Circulation Worksheet
Assessment Collaboration Assessment

Stage 3: Learning Experience

Prior Copy Work Sheet x 20 Resources Pump
to to Bring: White board Marker
Lesson:
Time: Content/Description Notes
Introduction:
- The heart is like a pump, where blood gets pumped around- SHOW
PUMP
3 min - What are any specific things the heart pumps around within the Discussion-
blood? formative
- Where does these things (nutrients, oxygen, carbon dioxide etc) go? assessment
- A way to measure heart rate (how fast your heart beats per a given
period) is by counting your pulse
- Everyone find an artery on their neck or wrist and we will count pulse
for 15 seconds (multiply by 4 to get beats per minute)
Body:
Learning Activity #1
11 min - Hand out work sheets
- When I say go get into partners and find enough space that you are an
arms length reach away from anyone Cooperation
- NO HITTING EACH OTHER Scientific
- One partner will be the timer and one partner will be the athlete Collaboration
- Before the athlete does exercise, find resting heart rate (count number
of beats for 30 seconds and multiply by 2)
- Do jumping jacks for 1 minute, and take heart rate after the exercise
15 min - Switch and allow your partner to become the athlete

Closure: Summative
- Hand in worksheet Assessment-
- Did your heart rate increase or decrease after exercise? Worksheet
EDUC 2500A/Griffioen Lesson/Date: Focus on Planning
- Why did it increase?
- Can you think of another situation that would make it increase?
- What can you do to have a lower heart rate?

What went well?

The class seemed to enjoy the physical activity and movement. I thought how I introduced the topic went well,
the students seemed attentive to listen to instructions for the activity.

What should have been done differently?

I should have made their partners in a more organized manner. I could have done everyone stand up with their
birthday month in June and then pair up based on months. I also think I should have explained better that one
student does jumping jacks and the other times, and then they switch many students went at the same time.
