Question 1

A 3-mm-thick glass window transmits 90% of the radiation between = 0.3 and 3.0 m and is
essentially opaque for radiation at other wavelengths. Determine the rate of radiation transmitted
through a 3-m X 3-m glass window from black body sources at

Question 2
A manufacturing factory located at 30o N latitude has a window area 35 m2 that consists of double-
pane windows made of clear glass (SHGC = 0.766) as given in the Figure Q2. To reduce the solar
heat gain on a hot day, a reflective film that reduce the SGHC to 0.261 is considered. The building
need cooling during the months of June, July, August and September and need heating during the
months of October through April. The average daily solar heat fluxes incident on the west side of
this latitude is given in the Table Q2 below. The unit cost of electricity and the natural gas are RM
0.30/kWh and RM1.75/therm, respectively. If the coefficient of performance of the cooling system is
3.0 and the efficiency of the furnace is 0.80. Determine:
i. the net annual cost savings due to installing reflective coating on the windows (15 Marks)
ii. the simple payback period if the installation cost of the reflective film is RM 70/m2

Question 3

a) A furnace that has a glass window of 50 cm X 50 cm can be considered as a blackbody at 1200

K. If the transmissivity of the glass is 0.7 for radiation at wavelength less than 3 m and zero for
radiation at wavelength greater than 3 m, determine the fraction and the rate of radiation coming
from the furnace and transmitted through the window. (5 marks)

b) The reflectivity of aluminum coated with lead sulfate is 0.35 for radiation at wavelength less than
3 m and 0.95 for radiation at wavelength greater than 3 m,

i. determine the average reflectivity of this surface for solar radiation (T=5800 K) and the
radiation coming from the surface at room temperature (T=300 K)
(10 marks)

ii. kindly evaluate based on the emissivity and the absorptivity of this surface at both
temperature, if the material is suitable for use in solar collectors.

Question 4

Radiation heat transfer differs from conduction and convection in that it does not require the presence
of a material medium to take place.

a) The clear example of radiation is the energy from the sun comes down to earth. These energy
travel from space to earth before it will be reflected, absorbed or transmitted from one medium to
another. Please write and discuss the equations of absorptivity, reflectivity and transmissivity.
(9 Marks)

b) An industrial furnace that has a 400mm 400mm glass window which can be considered to be a
blackbody at 1200 K. If the transmissivity of the glass is 0.7 for radiation at wavelengths less than
4 m and zero for radiation at wavelengths greater than 4 m, determine the fraction and the rate
of radiation coming from the furnace and transmitted through the window.
