The first big change affects PileDriver magazine. In the past, the magazine
was a quarterly publication, but beginning in 2017, there will be six issues
annually. This will give members two additional issues to showcase their companies Published by
and projects, and increase exposure of PDCA to more non-members. Whats more,
this first issue of the magazine for 2017 will have an additional 3,000 copies printed
to be used as handouts at the upcoming CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2017 in Las Vegas
this spring. This additional exposure for PDCA is something the organization has

ABOUT PDCA

Who Are We ?
About the Pile Driving Contractors Association:
Are you driven?
By Jill Harris

I
f you picked up this copy of PileDriver at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2017, you might be
unfamiliar with the Pile Driving Contractors Association (PDCA). However, if your
company drives any type of pile anywhere on the planet (or if you just want to know more
about your driven pile options), you need to know about us. We can help you.
PDCA is the only association in the world completely dedicated to promoting and
advancing the driven pile industry, and we just celebrated our 20-year anniversary in 2015.
Alongside our membership base of more than 900 contractors, engineers, equipment and
material manufacturers and suppliers, students, professors and other industry stakehold-
ers, we advocate strongly for the increased use of driven piles for deep foundations and earth
retention systems.
To do this, we:
Promote the use of driven pile solutions in all cases where they are effective
Support educational programs for engineers on the design and efficiency of driven piles
and for contractors on improving installation procedures
Encourage and support research that will improve the reliability, usefulness and cost-
effectiveness of driven piles
Give contractors a larger voice in establishing procedures and standards for the installa-
tion and design of driven piles

Fabricating Corporation
The secret to their success is giving their
customers what they need

A
merican Equipment and Fabricating Corporation (AE&F) has been
supplying and servicing pile driving and drilling equipment to the
heavy construction industry for more than 30 years. Formed from the
American Pile Driving Corporation/Guild Construction in 1985 and based in
East Providence, R.I., AE&F has earned an industry-wide reputation for service
response, solid expertise and the willingness to do whatever it takes to get the
customers job done.
Today, under the leadership of company president, Charles Booth, AE&F
has 27 employees providing rental, sales and service of a wide variety of equip-
ment along with the ability to design and manufacture specialty products on the
spot and as needed.

New location opening in Texas

Its that work ethic and commitment that has led to the expansion of the com-
panys supply and service area with a second location soon to be opened in Wills
Point, Texas, about 50 miles east of Dallas.
Soon, well be working at the Texas site in exactly the same way as we are in
Rhode Island, said Mike Abruzzo, who is responsible for sales and marketing at
AE&F. This new location will have a similar footprint on over five acres and with
plenty of room for growth as we move forward.
As a distributor for several pile driving and drilling equipment suppliers,
AE&F currently covers the Central and Eastern U.S. Once the Texas shop is open
for business in 2017, the company will be in an even better position to provide the
service that has set it apart from the crowd for so many years.

Service and satisfaction

Joe Gelardi, sales and rentals, Piling Equipment, is rightly proud of that legacy.
We work to diversify our product line and offer our customers some unique
products whatever they need to complete the job, he said. For example, we
have modern equipment that can be used effectively in close proximity to existing
buildings. A variable moment high frequency hammer can drive piles within three
to four feet of a structure.
Working with specialized equipment that may not yet be well-known in the
pile driving industry, AE&F is always looking to expose its customers to the new

We want to educate our customers as to what is available
to mitigate issues in the pile driving industry, said Gelardi. The
technology is out there; its just that it can take a long time from
development to implementation.
The AE&F booth will be easy to locate near Soilmec in the
heavy construction equipment area where company personnel
will be representing three equipment manufacturers. On display
will be a vibratory hammer by Midwest Vibro, the manufacturer
and distributor of H&M vibratory driver/extractors and impact
hammers. An excavator-mounted vibratory and impact hammer
from Dawson Construction Plant Ltd. will also be there. This

On virtually every major construction projectthat
requires foundation work, we sell the equipment to do it, said
Dragone.

Big contingent heading to CONEXPO

BAUER-Pileco has a staff of 74 at its Texas and California
offices and more than 100 others work at its four North

In March, BAUER-Pileco will be sending 60 staff members
to CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2017, the massive trade show tak-

Dragone says the reason so many BAUER-Pileco employ-

event that draws representatives from every major construction
industry.
This year, BAUER-Pileco has been allotted 10,000 square

currently serving as secretary for PDCA National and is also
the chair of the Communications Committee.
With its main office in Matthews, N.C., ICE has U.S. offic-
es in Seattle, Wash.; Katy, Texas; Tidewater, Va.; Washington,
D.C.; Sayreville, N.J.; New Orleans, La.; and Peru, Ill.
ICE Seattle is moving to a much expanded facility in the
same general area in early 2017, and ICE Texas is growing and
adding new team members at a very fast rate, said Christian
Cunningham.

areas has increased in size in its new facilities in 2016 and
has brought on new, talented service members to increase client
support efforts.
Also, ICE New Jersey expanded in 2016 with the addition
of three new large bore Commacchio drill rigs and GEO ther-
mal drills to our fleet, and ICE Louisiana is settling in nicely in
their updated facilities and is growing their fleet and customer
base, said Seufert. And, finally, ICE Midwest has a new facil-
ity that has doubled in size in just eight short months.

Main strengths
When asked what the companys main strength is, Christian
Cunningham says it is definitely ICEs team mentality.
We have such a vast pool of knowledge and experience,
which is hard to find all in one place. ICE is a second-generation
family-owned and operated company. The family members have
grown up in the industry, handling everything from design

As far as notable projects, Seufert says it is difficult to pin-

the world and used by small companies to big organizations to
huge partnerships.
Pretty much if you drive down any highway in North
America and there are bridges, new roads or repairs to founda-

as retaining walls for safety. We offer such a vast amount and
variation of equipment that it is hard not to find ICE equipment

Liebherr
Austrias deep foundation powerhouse
Liebherr Nenzing is set to exhibit
their latest products at this years
CONEXPO
By Jess Campbell

F
rom post-war Germany to one of the most recognizable
names in business, Liebherr continues to lead the con-
struction machinery industry in innovation, efficiency,
technology and growth. To this day, Liebherr remains true to the
values and vision of its founder, the late Hans Liebherr, sustain-
ing its leadership as 100 percent family-owned and employing
over 41,000 people across the globe in nine different divisions.
As an exhibitor and sponsor of this years CONEXPO-CON/
AGG 2017 in Las Vegas, youll be able to witness firsthand the
latest and most awe-inspiring products from Liebherr for deep
foundation construction. Like the foundations they so expertly
construct, Liebherrs roots are strong and deep and are what
keeps their future looking steady and bright.

PILEDRIVER | 87
LIEBHERR

Constructing history
Hans Liebherr founded his company in 1949 in response to
Germanys desperate need to rebuild following the end of WWII.
Liebherr-Werk Nenzing GmbH, however, was founded in 1976
as part of the Liebherr Group of Companies and is where all
Liebherrs products for the special deep foundation industry are
designed and produced. Headquartered in Nenzing, Austria, it
was in 1999 that the company began to develop the LRB series of
combined drilling and piling rigs they are now known for. Tobias
Froehlich, strategic marketing and communications for Liebherr-
Werk Nenzing GmbH, says that the decision to add machines
for various special deep foundation tasks to the product range was
based on an everything from a single source policy.
Customers who have to perform deep foundation work are
able to obtain all the machinery they need from Liebherr, said
Froehlich.
Since 1999, pure rotary drilling rigs and piling rigs have been
developed, with the first rotary drilling rig, the LB 28, being pre-
sented at Bauma in 2007. Five more LBs have since been developed,
creating a series of six machines with maximum torques from 180
kNm to 510 kNm, the latest of which is the LB 44 that was pre-
sented at Bauma in 2013.
Throughout countless developments as well as an unstable
world economy as of late, Liebherr maintains its strong position of
providing its customers with everything they need for deep founda-
tion construction.
Over the years, the company has developed into a system pro-
vider offering not only products but also various services and solu-
tions, which facilitate the process on the construction site. These

Since entering the market a dozen years ago, Link-Belts TCC
progression of high quality products, innovation and market share
dominance have been textbook. When first introduced in 2005,
the product line won early praise as a niche market solution to ease
off-road maneuvering common for foundation and powerline utility
applications, but Link-Belt TCCs have steadily grown into rental
and general construction fleets both domestically and abroad.
Today, Link-Belt leads the charge for developing a bulletproof telec-
rawler with a strong focus on ease of assembly, robust performance,
and transportation.
The seven-section 43.7 to 223-foot (13.8 67.9 m) pin and
latch boom is the longest in its class and offers eight simple boom
extend modes. The attachments will also be sure to impress with
a three-piece offsettable fly that measures 12, 40 and 67-foot (3.6,
12.1 and 20.4 m) and can also be equipped with two 25-foot (7.62
m) boom extensions for an overall tip height of 346 feet (105.46 m).
These attachments with optional hydraulic luffing allow for up-
and-over capacity like luffing lattice crawlers.
Our goal from the beginning was to supply a simplified
design quick and easy to assemble that is operator friendly,

As well, things have changed since

they started their American project.
We came to market as a supplier of
foreign steel, said Koelewijn. And we had
not a lot of steel on the ground in the U.S.
But since we are growing, we are shipping
a lot of steel to the U.S., which we will put
in stock to assure deliveries with short lead
time and still be competitive.
Over time, weve gotten in touch
with so many domestic suppliers that by
now we also have access to a decent prod-
uct range of sheet piles, pipes and beams
so foreign steel and domestic steel and that
makes us pretty versatile.
Koelewijn also mentions the Buy
American movement in the States, but
he acknowledges that theres a lot of con-
fusion there, even amongst contractors,
suggesting there needs to be more com-
munication regarding the issue across the
industry.
But there are a lot of options, even

Piling and drilling rigs

A wide range of Woltman piling and drill-
ing rigs vary in weight from 30 tons to 300
tons. While the piling industry in North
America showed initial resistance to the
use of purpose-built piling and drilling rigs
(sticking instead to the better-known drills
on cranes), uptake in the last few years has
risen and continues to rise, says Schieving.

Impact hammers
PVE offers a wide range of hydraulic impact
hammers that can be used in combination
with any type of pile driving machine or
with a PVE power pack. The hammers use
a modular system to which dropweights can
be added or removed to create the desired
impact energy.
